India and the Maldives have taken a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral relationship by signing an agreement to introduce Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services in the island nation. This development, announced during Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to the Maldives, is expected to have a profound impact on the tourism sector, particularly by attracting more Indian travelers.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Maldives was signed on Friday, marking a new chapter in India-Maldives cooperation. UPI, a real-time payment system developed by NPCI, has revolutionized digital transactions in India and is poised to do the same in the Maldives.

S. Jaishankar, during a press conference alongside his Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer, highlighted the transformative impact UPI has had on financial inclusion in India, where 40% of the world’s real-time digital payments occur. “With the signing of the MoU, we are bringing this digital innovation to the Maldives, which will undoubtedly have a very positive impact on tourism,” Jaishankar stated.

For Indian tourists, who make up a significant portion of visitors to the Maldives, the introduction of UPI services will simplify financial transactions, making it easier and more convenient to pay for services during their stay. This move is expected to encourage more Indian travelers to choose the Maldives as their preferred holiday destination, especially during peak travel seasons like Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day.

Tourism is the backbone of the Maldivian economy, contributing nearly 30% to its GDP and generating over 60% of foreign exchange. The introduction of UPI is likely to enhance the experience for tourists by offering seamless digital payment options, thereby boosting tourist arrivals from India, one of the Maldives’ largest source markets.

Moreover, the agreement between India and the Maldives reflects a broader commitment to deepening economic ties. The two countries have also agreed to explore the possibility of a Free Trade Agreement, which could further facilitate trade and investment, benefiting both nations.

Jaishankar’s visit, the first high-level trip from India after the Maldives’ pro-China president Mohamed Muizzu took office, signals a renewed focus on resetting and enhancing bilateral relations. The partnership between India and the Maldives is built on mutual trust and respect, with both nations committed to fostering a vibrant and prosperous relationship.

As UPI services are rolled out in the Maldives, Indian tourists can look forward to a more connected and hassle-free travel experience, further solidifying the Maldives’ status as a premier destination for Indian travelers.
