India is doubling down on its efforts to attract German tourists in 2024, as the country’s tourism board pledges immersive, authentic and, most importantly, sustainable experiences to travelers from Europe and beyond.

“We want inbound tourism from Europe and Germany in particular, that’s why we’re here in the German capital,” the Joint Secretary of India’s Ministry of Tourism, M.R. Synrem, told TTW at this year’s ITB congress in Berlin, adding that other attractive source markets included the US, Swiss and Global South.

German travel to India has yet to recover since the pandemic. In an effort to attract new visitors, India’s tourism ministry has kickstarted a number of enticing initiatives. This includes emphasizing the nation as a wedding destination, and developing immersive travel experiences that allow visitors to get to understand what life really is like in India.

The ‘Travel for LiFE’ initiative, envisioned by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to foster sustainable tourism such that tourists and tourists operators alike are inspired to embrace measures that help conserve natural resources, preserves biodiversity, boosts local economies and safe-guards local communities, while enabling unforgettable travel experiences and connections.

“We want people who visit India to experience the culture, the cuisine. Experience the people. Because that’s a whole new experience,” said M.R. Synrem. “Because that’s a whole new experience. People come, understand the lifestyle, understand what people eat,” he said.

Sustainability also features high on the agenda of India’s Tourism Ministry.
“While I am excited to see development in the country’s (tourism sector), at the same time, it’s important to have concern for the environment. We want to have more sustainable tourism and we believe in making everything green,” M.R Synrem told Travel and Tour World. “I am cautiously optimistic that we’ll end 2024 on a better note than how we ended 2023”.
