A Mumbai-Guwahati IndiGo flight was diverted to Dhaka due to heavy fog, stranding passengers including a political figure on board.
A Mumbai-to-Guwahati IndiGo aircraft, flight number 6E 5319, unexpectedly landed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, early on Saturday morning due to visibility issues, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The aircraft was originally scheduled to land at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport but encountered heavy fog, necessitating a diversion to Dhaka, situated approximately 400 kilometers from Guwahati.
Thick fog obstructing visibility led to the decision to redirect the flight to Dhaka instead of landing in Guwahati, as reported by those involved.
The aircraft touched down at Dhaka International Airport around 4 a.m. on Saturday.
Among the passengers was Suraj Singh Thakur, former head of the Mumbai Youth Congress, who was en route to Imphal, Manipur, to participate in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
Thakur shared on social media, “I boarded IndiGo flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati. However, the intense fog prevented a Guwahati landing, leading to an unscheduled landing in Dhaka. Currently, all passengers are stranded in Bangladesh, confined within the aircraft without passports.”
Thakur mentioned that passengers have been waiting inside the plane for nine hours.
There were 178 passengers aboard, as confirmed by informed individuals.
IndiGo is arranging a replacement crew to fly the aircraft from Dhaka to Guwahati, the airline announced.
In a Saturday statement, IndiGo explained, “Flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati was rerouted to Dhaka, Bangladesh, due to adverse weather in Guwahati. For operational reasons, we are organizing a substitute crew to manage the Dhaka to Guwahati leg. Passengers were regularly updated and provided refreshments onboard. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
