Indonesia improving tourism villages as flagship program

Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy in Indonesia has said they areimproving tourism villages as part of a flagship program of the Ministry.


Tourism villages became a preferred choice of tourists in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, said Uno.


Uno selected Sembungan in Kejajar Sub-district, Wonosobo District, as one of the 50 top tourism villages for this year’s Indonesian Tourism Village Award.

He said that they are dedicated to develop tourism villages to be a flagship program. The democratization of this tourism is providingprofits that can be sensed by the entire community in a straight way.


Minister Uno said that art and cultural actors also delight in the welfares of tourist influxes in these tourism villages.

Around 250 thousand tourists come to Sembungan Tourism Village every year and their visits make a direct influenceon the localites. Last year, Nglanggeran, a village located in Gunung Kidup District, Yogyakarta Province, Java Island, bagged the ‘Best Tourism Village Award’ from the UNWTO.

Overall, the organization felicitated 44 villages from 32 nations with the Best Tourism Village Awards for 2021.


The UNWTO said on its websitethat these tourism villagesare prominent for their natural and cultural wealthin addition totheir groundbreaking and transformative activities and a pledgefor theexpansion of tourism in agreement with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
