The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry urged Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry players to apply sustainability principles in their events to present more inclusive and higher quality tourism and creative economy services.

In his official statement here on Thursday, the ministry’s Deputy for Tourism Products and Events Organization, Vinsensius Jemadu, stated that the sustainability issue is currently a cause for concern for world artists and the management in holding concerts.

These world-class artists may not even need to be paid on their world tour as long as they know or they can be convinced that they really apply the sustainability principles.

(This is) because environmental issues have become a global concern, he remarked.

He cited an example of a concert held in Africa for which the tickets were free of charge though those attending the show were invited to do a beach clean-up.

Maybe such practices can also be applied in Indonesia because issues related to waste have now become very sensitive and very critical for the country.

Thus, hopefully, event industry players can start thinking about how sustainability principles can be applied in organizing every event, Jemadu remarked.

This should become a cause for concern for industry players, as events can have impacts that can be felt by the community, both in terms of the economy and the creation of job opportunities.

For instance, the MotoGP event recently held in Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), offered an economic added value of above Rp4.5 trillion (around US$302.17 million).

Moreover, the recent F1H20 powerboat racing event in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, was able to drive the development of infrastructure and increase people’s awareness to improve the quality of their businesses to welcome tourists partaking in the event.
