Emirates Deepens New Maldives Links as Dubai Strengthens Indian Ocean Travel
The connection between aviation and tourism in the Maldives will certainly become more evident through the MOU that will be signed by the Visit Maldives Corporation and Emirates in 2026 at the Arabian Travel Market. The signing of the MOU will take place on September 15, 2026. It will be characterised by marketing and promotion of the Maldives in the international market, which is undoubtedly an important step since the Arabian Travel Market 2026 is scheduled to take place from September 14-17, 2026, at Dubai World Trade Centre.
Emirates Remains a Major Maldives Gateway
Emirates has served the Maldives since 1987 and remains one of the country’s important international aviation partners.

The airline’s current published schedule shows 21 flights a week between Dubai and Malé, although frequencies can vary by season. The route is operated with Boeing 777 aircraft, with the journey taking roughly four hours.
That connectivity gives Malé a direct link into Dubai’s extensive global aviation network.

For travellers, this means the Maldives can be incorporated into longer itineraries that begin in Europe, continue through the Gulf and finish in the Indian Ocean. Dubai also provides a convenient stopover option for passengers combining a city break with a beach holiday.
The new agreement does not, however, establish a new “four-daily” Emirates Malé schedule or a newly activated booking corridor as described in the original development. Emirates’ current official schedule shows 21 weekly flights, so the precise frequency should be checked against the travel date before booking.

A Partnership Built Around More Than Flights
The new Emirates and Visit Maldives agreement is broader than an airline capacity announcement.
According to Visit Maldives, the two organisations will work together on destination marketing, travel-trade engagement, joint campaigns and familiarisation initiatives across mutually agreed markets. The objective is to strengthen demand for the Maldives through Emirates’ extensive international network.
That distinction matters for the destination.
Air connectivity can put a country within easier reach, but coordinated marketing helps turn that access into bookings. By working with travel agents, tour operators and other industry partners, Visit Maldives can promote specific experiences and accommodation products to markets where Emirates already has a substantial presence.
The Maldives Is Broadening Its Tourism Proposition
The traditional image of the Maldives remains strongly associated with private villas, turquoise lagoons and luxury resorts.
At ATM 2026, however, Visit Maldives is presenting a considerably broader proposition.

The country’s largest tourism delegation of the year includes 165 representatives from 74 tourism companies. The destination is promoting luxury resorts alongside liveaboards, diving, surfing, wellness, family holidays, local-island experiences, adventure travel and MICE tourism.
That diversification is particularly relevant to Emirates’ global network.
Not every traveller arriving in Malé is looking for the same holiday. Some may want a honeymoon resort, while others may be interested in diving, surfing, a family break or a local-island stay.
The aviation partnership therefore gives the Maldives a platform to market a wider range of products rather than depending exclusively on the traditional luxury-resort segment.
Dubai Connects the Maldives With Wider Markets
Dubai’s position is central to the strategy.
The UAE functions as both an important source market for the Maldives and a major international transfer point. Visit Maldives identifies the UAE as particularly important because Dubai connects the archipelago with the GCC, Europe and other international markets.

That makes the Dubai-Malé corridor more significant than its geographical distance suggests.
A traveller from London, Frankfurt, Paris or another European city can use Dubai as a connecting point before continuing towards Malé. Similar opportunities exist for passengers travelling from other regions served by Emirates.
For the Maldives, every additional international connection potentially widens the pool of travellers able to reach its islands without complicated routing.
Single-Ticket Island Connections Already Exist
The relationship between Emirates and the Maldives extends beyond the main airport at Malé.
Emirates already has an interline partnership with Maldivian, the country’s national airline, allowing passengers to book itineraries on a single ticket connecting through Malé to a range of domestic destinations across the islands. Emirates announced the partnership in 2023, with bookings available through Emirates’ website, app and travel agents.
This arrangement is important for the structure of Maldivian tourism.

Velana International Airport in Malé is the country’s main international gateway, but the final destination for many visitors is another island. A coordinated international-to-domestic journey reduces the complexity of arranging separate tickets for the final leg.
For international luxury travellers, that can make remote island resorts easier to incorporate into a single booking.
ATM 2026 Creates a Wider Aviation Push
The Emirates agreement comes as Visit Maldives uses ATM 2026 to strengthen relationships with multiple aviation partners.
The tourism authority has also signed an MoU with Qatar Airways, extending its promotional reach across additional international markets.
Emirates, meanwhile, announced 11 partnership agreements on 15 September, involving destination authorities and airline partners as part of a broader effort to deepen cooperation across its global network.
Together, these agreements demonstrate how airlines and destination marketing organisations are increasingly working together rather than treating air connectivity and tourism promotion as separate activities.
The Maldives Looks Towards Its Next Growth Phase
As part of the visit to Maldives Year 2027 campaign, the new partnership between Emirates and the Maldives will enhance the connectivity of the destination authority through the opening up of new air corridors. However, rather than being an entirely new air corridor, the partnership will improve one that already exists and will see Dubai still being an important link between the destination and global markets. Emirates offers important connectivity into Malé from the long-haul destinations, while Maldivian airlines will connect from domestic airports to the destination. While preparing for the upcoming tourism campaign, the Maldives will look to move beyond bringing tourists to Malé but enhancing their travel experiences as well by improving the journey from the departure city to the resort islands in the Maldives.
