Brazil Travel Soars As National Survey Tracks 22500 Visitors Across 50 Destinations To Shape Tourism Future as the country launches its first National Tourism Demand Survey to understand visitor profiles, travel behaviour and spending patterns. The initiative is designed to collect detailed insights from 22,500 travellers across 50 destinations, helping Brazil develop data-driven tourism strategies, improve destination services and strengthen sustainable growth across its diverse regions. The research will provide authorities with valuable information on traveller expectations, experiences and market trends to support the future direction of Brazilian tourism.

Brazil has launched its first National Tourism Demand Survey (PNDT) to gain deeper insights into traveller behaviour, destination preferences and tourism experiences across the country. The nationwide research initiative will collect data from visitors in 50 municipalities across Brazil’s five regions, creating a stronger foundation for sustainable tourism planning and future industry development.

The survey is being conducted by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism in partnership with Itaipu Parquetec, with approximately 22,500 face-to-face interviews planned during the research period. Data collection began on September 16 and will continue until October 3, providing detailed information about domestic and international visitors travelling through key tourism destinations.

The initiative has been designed to understand how travellers select destinations, prepare for trips and evaluate their experiences. The collected information will support Brazil’s National Sustainable Tourism Observatory, helping tourism authorities develop strategies based on real visitor behaviour and market trends.

Brazil Creates First Nationwide Visitor Data System to Improve Tourism Planning

The National Tourism Demand Survey represents a major step towards creating a unified understanding of Brazil’s tourism sector. Until now, destination-level visitor information has often been collected through separate regional studies. The new research aims to establish a consistent national framework for analysing tourist movements and expectations.

Visitors participating in the survey are being asked about several aspects of their journeys. These include their reasons for travelling, methods used to organise trips and the sources of information that influenced their destination choices.

The questionnaire also examines practical travel factors such as transportation options, accommodation choices, length of stay, travel companions and tourism activities experienced during visits.

Visitor spending is another key focus area. Information about tourism expenditure will help authorities understand the economic contribution generated by travellers in different destinations and identify opportunities to strengthen local tourism businesses.

The survey also measures visitor opinions regarding infrastructure, accessibility, safety, digital connectivity, service quality and destination prices. These insights are expected to highlight areas where improvements can enhance the overall travel experience.

Sustainable Tourism Strategy Gains Support Through Data Driven Research

The research forms part of the broader activities of Brazil’s National Sustainable Tourism Observatory, created through a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Tourism and Itaipu Parquetec in February 2025.

The three-year partnership focuses on advancing innovation, digital transformation, sustainability and responsible tourism development. By collecting detailed visitor information, the programme aims to provide reliable evidence for improving tourism policies and strengthening destinations.

The Brazilian Network of Tourism Observatories is also supporting the project by contributing to methodology development, coordinating field operations and consolidating research findings.

The final results are expected to provide statistical representation for each participating municipality. The findings are scheduled to be published through digital dashboards operated by the National Sustainable Tourism Observatory by April 2027.

Tourism authorities and local governments will be able to use the data to better understand visitor demand, improve destination services and create targeted tourism strategies.

50 Brazilian Destinations Participate in Major Tourism Research Programme

The municipalities selected for the survey were chosen based on Brazil’s official Tourism Map in place when the cooperation agreement was introduced. The selection considered destinations with strong tourism potential according to the General Municipal Index, which evaluates municipalities using 70 indicators across 10 tourism-related areas.

The research covers destinations from every part of Brazil.

In the North region, participating locations include Belém, Manaus, Macapá, Boa Vista, Palmas, Porto Velho and Rio Branco, alongside other municipalities.

The Northeast region features major tourism destinations including Recife, Fortaleza, Salvador, João Pessoa, Natal, Maceió, São Luís, Porto Seguro and Fernando de Noronha.

The Southeast region includes major urban and coastal destinations such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Vitória, Vila Velha, Ilhabela and Armação dos Búzios.

The South region includes Balneário Camboriú, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Foz do Iguaçu, Gramado and Porto Alegre.

The Central-West region is represented by Brasília, Goiânia, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Caldas Novas, Sinop and Três Lagoas.

Brazil Travel is entering a new data-driven phase as the country studies 22,500 visitors across 50 destinations to improve tourism planning, visitor experiences and sustainable growth.

Brazil Expands Tourism Research Tools for Future Destinations

Beyond the current survey, Brazil plans to make the research infrastructure available to other municipalities interested in applying the same methodology. The project includes a validated questionnaire, digital data collection platform and online training resources for researchers.

Workshops will be organised across Brazil’s five regions to share knowledge and strengthen tourism research capabilities. A national conference planned for the first half of 2027 will present the methodology and discuss findings from the initiative.

The survey is being carried out by trained researchers positioned at locations where visitors commonly gather and circulate. Participants must be at least 18 years old, not residents of the municipality being surveyed and must have completed or intend to complete an overnight stay during their trip.
