In a significant stride towards enhancing its tourism infrastructure, Iran, under the leadership of President Hassan Rouhani, is set to introduce electronic visas for foreign tourists by the end of 2016. This announcement came from Masoud Soltanifar, Vice-President and Head of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization, during the opening ceremony of an international tourism exhibition.

Soltanifar revealed that the government is actively working on visa waiver schemes with 28 countries, signaling a commitment to ease travel restrictions and promote a more accessible environment for international visitors. As of now, travelers from 190 countries can obtain 30-day visas upon arrival at seven airports, with the option to extend their stay for an additional 15 days.

One of the key initiatives of President Rouhani’s administration over the past two years has been the strategic development of the tourism industry. The concerted efforts have borne fruit, evident in the impressive growth rate of tourist arrivals, standing at an impressive 12 percent. This growth rate is three times higher than the global average, signifying Iran’s rising stature as a preferred travel destination.

Soltanifar emphasized that Iran boasts the highest level of security in the region, a crucial factor contributing to the surge in tourist footfall. The perception of safety has played a pivotal role in attracting visitors from around the world, as they increasingly recognize Iran as a stable and welcoming country.

With the introduction of electronic visas, Iran aims to streamline the entry process for foreign tourists, providing them with a convenient and efficient means to plan their trips. This move aligns with global trends in leveraging technology to enhance the overall travel experience for visitors.

As the tourism landscape in Iran continues to evolve, the government’s commitment to fostering international relationships through visa facilitation is a testament to its dedication to positioning Iran as a premier global travel destination. With a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality, Iran is poised to become an increasingly sought-after location for global travelers seeking unique and enriching experiences.

According to Hasan Al-Saegh, Marketing Manager at the Iraq Tourism Board, Iraq is renowned for Babylon and the birthplace of Prophet Ibrahim, welcomes millions of tourists annually. Highlighting holy shrines dedicated to Prophet Muhammad’s cousins, he emphasizes the stability of Iraq and its appeal as a tourist destination. Al-Saegh points out the historic visit by Pope Francis in 2021 as a testament to Iraq’s openness to visitors. Encouraging people to explore the diverse attractions, he assures that Iraq is not only stable but offers an enjoyable experience for those seeking to witness its rich cultural and historical heritage.

Iran’s initiative to implement electronic visas and explore visa waiver agreements underscores its progressive approach to tourism. By embracing modern technologies and fostering diplomatic ties, Iran is paving the way for a new era of global tourism, inviting travelers to discover the treasures within its borders.
