Next month, the dynamic Design Space AlUla will open its doors during AlUla’s arts festival, marking a new chapter in the region’s vibrant cultural landscape. Nestled in the AlJadidah Arts District, this space is set to become a cornerstone for showcasing AlUla’s diverse design initiatives, contributing significantly to the city’s vision.
Design Space AlUla stands out with its contemporary architecture of corten steel, glass, and polished concrete, designed by Giò Forma Studio. It echoes the district’s architectural style with a modern twist, featuring a luminous courtyard and a lattice façade for natural light and ventilation.
This innovative hub aims to foster collaboration among design professionals, students, and enthusiasts. It’s more than just a space; it’s a crucible of creative exchange, strengthening AlUla’s legacy in the cultural sphere and serving as a catalyst for inspiration.
Its inaugural exhibition, “Mawrid: Celebrating Inspired Design,” is a showcase of AlUla-inspired designs across various disciplines. Scheduled from February 15 to June 1, the exhibition will delve into the design thinking process behind these creations.
Under the direction of curator Sara Ghani, Design Space AlUla seeks to engage with a broad spectrum of design professionals. The exhibitions, workshops, and archives are all focused on exploring design principles through AlUla’s unique natural and cultural landscape.
The projects featured in the exhibition are a testament to AlUla’s influence on global design. They include the mirror-clad Maraya venue by Giò Forma Studio/Black Engineering, the renovation of Madrasat Addeera by Hopkins Architects, and the Azulik Eco Resort by Roth Architecture, all showcasing a harmonious blend with AlUla’s environment.
Additionally, the exhibition highlights the work of finalists from the AlUla Design Awards and participants in the AlUla Design Residency. These include international and local designers who have collaborated in AlUla, contributing to its cultural and infrastructural development.
For tourism businesses and tourists, the opening of Design Space AlUla represents a unique opportunity. It not only showcases the rich history and cultural significance of AlUla but also positions it as a hub for contemporary design and creative collaboration. This convergence of history, art, and design is set to attract a diverse array of visitors, from design aficionados to cultural tourists, enriching their experience and boosting tourism in the region.
As a melting pot of cultural exchange and artistic innovation, Design Space AlUla is more than just a venue; it’s a destination where the past and future of design intersect, creating a unique and enriching experience for all who visit.
