Marriott International has reported a landmark year of expansion in the Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) region, securing an unprecedented 109 hotel deals across 11 markets in 2024. This surge in agreements has added 21,439 rooms to its development pipeline, bringing the total to 77,532 rooms by year-end. The company’s growth has been fueled by a strategic focus on conversions and multi-unit agreements, further solidifying its market presence. Marriott continues to diversify its portfolio, entering the midscale segment for the first time while also strengthening its luxury footprint, reinforcing its leadership in the region’s dynamic hospitality sector.

Expansion Across Key Markets and Segments

Marriott International experienced significant growth in its Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) region in 2024, securing 109 hotel agreements that contributed 21,439 rooms to its development pipeline. This expansion elevated the company’s regional pipeline to 363 properties with a total of 77,532 rooms, marking a 12% year-over-year increase. India, Japan, and Indonesia emerged as the strongest growth markets, collectively accounting for 72% of the region’s deal signings.

The company continues to strengthen its presence in the luxury segment, which made up 19% of the new agreements in 2024. More than 20 luxury deals were signed, adding 4,600 rooms across six Marriott International Luxury Group brands. This expansion aligns with rising demand from high-end travelers seeking premium experiences in both established and up-and-coming destinations. Notable upcoming openings include EDITION hotels in Jakarta and Mumbai, The Ritz-Carlton properties in Jaipur and Udaipur, and a second W Hotel in Singapore.

Conversions and multi-unit agreements played a pivotal role in Marriott’s regional pipeline growth, with conversions comprising 36% of all 2024 signings. A major milestone was the launch of Four Points Flex by Sheraton in Japan, marking the company’s entry into the affordable midscale category in the region. This debut was part of a strategic collaboration with KKR to transform 14 properties across 10 Japanese cities. In November 2024, the brand officially entered the market with the opening of Four Points Flex by Sheraton Osaka Umeda, which also became Marriott’s 100th property in Japan.

Expanding Market Presence and Introducing New Brands

Marriott International continued its strategic expansion across the Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) region in 2024, entering new destinations and launching fresh brand experiences tailored to evolving traveler preferences. The company marked its debut in Papua New Guinea with the opening of Marriott Executive Apartments Port Moresby, extending its operational footprint to 22 countries and territories within APEC.

The vibrant and experience-driven Moxy Hotels brand also made its way into new markets, following its success in Japan, South Korea, and Australia. Notable debuts included Moxy Bengaluru Prestige Tech Cloud in India, Moxy Putrajaya in Malaysia, and Moxy Bangkok Ratchaprasong in Thailand, each designed to attract modern travelers seeking bold, stylish, and social stays.

Milestone Openings and Regional Growth

With a record-breaking year of development, Marriott celebrated several significant property openings across the region:

  • Marriott’s 600th hotel in APEC – Adelaide Marriott Hotel, Australia
  • India’s milestone 150th Marriott property – Katra Marriott Resort & Spa
  • Malaysia’s 50th Marriott-branded hotel – Penang Marriott Complex
  • Japan’s 100th Marriott property – Four Points Flex by Sheraton Osaka Umeda

By the end of 2024, Marriott International’s portfolio in APEC had grown to 635 operational hotels across 25 brands in 22 countries and territories. This continued expansion reinforces the company’s leadership in the region’s hospitality sector, offering compelling opportunities for developers and real estate investors while delivering diverse and innovative travel experiences.
