Joby Aviation, revealed today its collaboration with Atlantic Aviation to electrify existing aviation infrastructure in New York and Southern California. Joby Aviation is a company dedicated to developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for commercial passenger service, with a focus on launching a groundbreaking air taxi service.

The partnership with Atlantic, a prominent provider of aviation services and infrastructure, will center on activating key Atlantic sites to support emissions-free and quiet air taxis. This initiative includes the deployment of Joby’s Global Electric Aviation Charging System (GEACS). The collaboration aims to conduct a thorough analysis of integrating Joby’s innovative air taxi operations at these locations alongside traditional and other electric aircraft. The goal is to offer customers a novel and sustainable way to navigate congested urban areas.

With an extensive operational presence in major U.S. cities, particularly in New York City and Los Angeles, Atlantic and Joby will initially concentrate their efforts on these locations. JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, emphasized the importance of infrastructure in this endeavor and expressed enthusiasm for laying the foundation for the next generation of clean and quiet flight.

John Redcay, Chief Commercial & Sustainability Officer at Atlantic, highlighted the collaboration’s significance in advancing existing aviation infrastructure and positioning Atlantic as a leading supporter of electric aviation growth. Atlantic is committed to being technology-agnostic, supporting various aircraft types at its facilities, in line with its focus on creating critical infrastructure for aviation.

Joby’s GEACS, designed for electric aircraft charging, is already operational at Edwards Air Force Base and Joby’s flight testing facility in Marina, California. The system, featuring simultaneous recharging of multiple battery packs, external coolant exchange, and secure data offload after flight, is tailored for interoperability with various electric aircraft developers.

Joby Aviation’s air taxi, capable of carrying a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph, provides high-speed mobility with minimal noise and zero in-flight emissions. The recent completion of the first-ever flight of an electric air taxi in New York City underscores the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable urban air mobility, coinciding with the city’s plans to electrify the Downtown Manhattan Heliport.
