Kerala creates new record with 20% increase in domestic tourist arrivals

Kerala witnessed an increaseof 20.1% in domestic tourist arrivals in the first half of 2023, setting a new high. In the first six months of the calendar year, a total of 1,06,83,643 domestic tourists visited Kerala.


According to a declaration made in the state parliament by Tourism Minister Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas, the statistics for the same time the previous year were 88,95,593. The Minister went on to say that the results showed a significant increase in Kerala’s tourism sector.


According to Shri Riyas, the state also saw an increase in domestic tourist arrivals compared to the pre-COVID period.


Foreign tourists totaled 2,87,730 in the first half of 2023, up from 1,05,960 in the same time the previous year. There was an increase of 1,81,770, representing a 171.55% gain.


From 2020 to 2022, the state also saw a steady increase in tourism earnings. According to the minister, the tourism sector earned Rs. 35,168.42 crore in 2022, up from Rs. 12,285.91 crore in 2021 and Rs. 11,335.96 crore in 2020.


According to Tourism Secretary Shri Biju K., the increase in domestic tourist footfalls indicates that 2023 would undoubtedly be a record-breaking year for Kerala Tourism.


Tourism Director Shri P. B. Nooh stated that the rise in tourist arrivals reflected the greater acceptability of new goods and efforts introduced by the state to entice visitors.


According to Tourism Department figures, Ernakulam led the district in domestic tourist arrivals with 22,16,250, followed by Idukki (18,01,502), Thiruvananthapuram (17,21,264), Thrissur (11,67,788), Wayanad (8,71,664), and Kozhikode (6,74,237).
