As the UT administration is preparing to observe tourism week starting from Friday, from the tourism department, the numbers show a huge 85% drop in arrivals of domestic tourists in the first seven months of 2023.
This year, compared to January 1 to July 2022 which saw around 21.63 lakh domestic visitors, their numbers dropped to 3.2 lakh same time 2023.
However, the influx of tourists from abroad witnessed a rapid growth over the same time. In 2022 it was 14,723, the number zoomed to 37,026 which was a huge 150% spike. Most of these visitors came from countries like Spain, France, Germany and Italy.
The decline in the arrival of domestic tourists however emphasizes at the immediate need to promote the city as a niche destination for modern architecture aggressively which has well-designed layout and calming greenery, besides initiations to attract in more facilities for visitors.
In Chandigarh, the main tourist places are the Rock Garden, Capitol Complex – a UNESCO world heritage site, Bird Park, Sukhna Lake, Indian Air Force Heritage Centre, Art Gallery and Government Museum. UT officials say that the drop in tourists happened due to the extreme weather conditions from May 2023, as
summer vacations were ongoing.
