The Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, together with officials from Sichuan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), extended a hearty welcome to travelers arriving on Sichuan Airlines from Chengdu and China Southern Airlines from Shenzhen at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The aircraft were greeted with a ceremonial water salute by MAHB, celebrating the passengers of Flight 3U3993 on March 31, 2024, and CZ5079 on April 1, 2024.

The introduction of daily flights from Chengdu and Shenzhen, utilizing the Airbus A321 with 192 seats and the Airbus A320neo with 165 seats respectively, signifies a key development in boosting tourist exchanges between these cities.

The Sichuan Airlines’ direct service is an addition to the existing 16 weekly flights from Sichuan Province by various carriers. In the same vein, the new China Southern Airlines’ route supplements the 35 weekly flights from Shenzhen provided by AirAsia and Shenzhen Airlines.

The visa-free policy for Chinese travellers to Malaysia effective 1st December 2023 until 31st December 2024 has seen a significant increase in bookings to Malaysia. “With the visa exemption and more upcoming new flights throughout 2024, we are optimistic to hit the target of welcoming 7 million tourists from China to experience the best of Malaysia,” said Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.

In 2023, Malaysia saw a dramatic rise in visitors from China, with 1.47 million tourists, marking a 593.4% increase from the 212,603 visitors recorded in the same timeframe in 2022. From being the sixth highest source of tourist arrivals in 2022, China moved up to fourth place in 2023.

Tourism Malaysia is eager to continue building strategic partnerships and collaborations with international airlines to boost travel from China, aiming to enhance tourism and cultural exchange.
