Latin America and Caribbean Aviation soars in January 2024: passenger traffic surges by 7.6%, setting new records

The dawn of 2024 heralded promising skies. January witnessed a commendable surge in passenger traffic across Latin America and the Caribbean, marking a 7.6% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This uptick translates to nearly 3 million additional passengers, surpassing both the figures from January 2023 and the peak observed in July of the preceding year.

January witnessed a commendable surge in passenger traffic across Latin America and the Caribbean, marking a 7.6% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This uptick translates to nearly 3 million additional passengers, surpassing both the figures from January 2023 and the peak observed in July of the preceding year.

According to the Passenger Traffic Report compiled by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), a total of 41.7 million passengers were transported within, to, and from the region in January alone.

“This month’s report reflects a spectacular start to the year. The increase in flight frequencies and capacity offered in both the domestic and international markets underline the potential for continued growth of our countries in regards to an essential service. These Data tells us that 2024 is shaping up to be a promising year for the region,” said José Ricardo Botelho, executive director and CEO of ALTA.

The availability of seats expanded, reaching a total of 51.2 million seats, marking a 5% increase from 2023. Notably, the international sector demonstrated robust growth, surging by 15.7%, whereas the domestic segment experienced a 3.5% decrease.

“The positive passenger traffic figures for January are not only an indicator of a booming sector, but also a wake-up call about the importance of promoting the development of aviation in our region. These data reflect an encouraging outlook, however , to fully capitalize on this positive momentum, it is essential to establish an enabling environment that provides legal certainty, predictability and competitiveness necessary for the continued growth of aviation. These figures are a reminder that aviation is not only a means of transportation, but also a vital industry that requires attention and support to thrive and fully contribute to the progress of our region,” Botelho recalls.

Domestic Market Insights:

Venezuela showcased remarkable growth in its domestic market, with a surge of 36% compared to the previous year, amounting to 199,291 passengers. Similarly, Chile experienced a significant uptick of 21%, totaling 1.7 million passengers.

In Brazil, there was a notable movement of 8.1 million passengers, representing 98% of the volume observed in the corresponding period of the previous year. Colombia’s domestic market expanded by 2%, transporting 2.8 million passengers. However, this growth rate indicates a slight deceleration compared to December’s 4% increase.

On the contrary, Mexico witnessed a 3% decline in total passenger numbers, amounting to 4.8 million. This reduction continues the trend observed in December, where a 1% decrease was noted in the domestic market.

“Since June 2023, the Mexican domestic market has faced challenges due to required inspections for GTF engines, which has resulted in the temporary grounding of some aircraft while inspections are carried out. Additionally, after the recent return of Mexico to Category 1 by the FAA, local airlines have been able to increase the capacity offered to the United States, reflecting an effort to expand their presence and services in this important market,” the report explains.

Global Market

Significant growth was witnessed in the international market, with a notable 14% surge, accommodating 20.3 million passengers. Venezuela notably excelled in this realm with an outstanding 58% increase, particularly on the Caracas-Madrid route, which experienced a remarkable 33% growth. Colombia also demonstrated substantial progress, transporting 1.9 million international passengers, marking a 30% rise compared to January 2023, equating to an additional 457,939 passengers. Similarly, Brazil experienced a commendable 26% uptick in international passengers, totaling 2.3 million.
