International travel is experiencing a decline following the pandemic; hence, lesser-known local destinations are expected to boost the tourism sector. This trend was witnessed when the tourism sector re-opened after the first wave of COVID-19, where lesser-known tourist spots received a large number of visitors compared to the popular ones.

“The crowded tourism spots are no longer preferred by international and domestic tourists. They prefer countryside, hill destinations, and rural landscape,” opined Rajeshkumar, a consultant with a tourism agency with its office in Munnar. Tourism in the district is facing a downturn since the 2018 floods, he said.

District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) Secretary Gireesh P.S. said that it may take long to re-establish the normal arrival of international tourists. Like domestic tourists, international tourists will avoid crowded areas after Covid. Domestic and international tourists prefer farm tourism and hill destinations as a substitute for adventure tourism or entertainment programmes.

Mr. Gireesh said that lesser-known tourist spots which recently gained reputation are Aruvikkuzhy, Panchalimedu and the Ripples waterfalls at Sree Narayanapuram. These destinations witnessed more tourists when they reopened after the first wave of the pandemic.

Entertainment activities might not be available at lesser-known destinations, although a peaceful ambience is there. Visitors might prefer visiting places with a large area and less crowds.
