The Covid-19 pandemic has considerably affected the international tourism industry in a massive way.
By constant lockdowns, the income of local business owners in Malaysia was rigorously impacted, along with the movement control order and the border closing order in order to stop the spread of Covid-19.
The recovery process since reopening of the financial sectors has been slow, at best.
Sara Shera, from Perhentian Rambo, has a family-run travel business that offers tour packages as well as lodgings in Terengganu, Pulau Perhentian, had struggled immensely at the time of the first MCO.
Sara said that because of the travel limitations, not only business experienced lack of tourists, but it was tough for all of them to get by on the islands as well as they couldn’t go to the mainland to secure the supplies.
Islanders, like her husband, went spearfishing or fishing infrequently to offer them with enough refill, she disclosed.
Within cities like Kuala Lumpur, businesses went through same type of experiences.
The director of Sales, Groups, Meetings and Events at Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur who preferred not to be named, said that it certainly affected the revenue as well as the profit of the organization with restrictions in travel imposed by the government and people being scared to meet people on a face to face basis. In the hospitality industry, not much demand is created. The government put in place several measures at the time.
