London Luton Airport’s latest trend report reveals that as the number of passengers approaches pre-pandemic levels, holiday behaviors are becoming more adventurous and daring.
In 2024, travelers are embracing bold experiences across all aspects of their journeys, from exploring unfamiliar destinations and unconventional itineraries to venturing with new travel companions.
For music enthusiasts, the willingness to chase their favorite artists to unexpected locations is on the rise. A significant 50% of respondents admit they would plan a trip to an unknown country or city to catch a live performance, with 35% finding it easier to secure concert tickets abroad than in the UK. Inspired by the success of Taylor Swift’s Era Tour, termed ‘Swiftie Stays,’ participants believe that tours offer an ideal opportunity to discover new regions (74%), immerse themselves in different cultures (71%), and save money in the process (32%).
A growing trend, Destination Dupes, sees 56% of holidaymakers seeking affordable alternatives for their summer vacations by identifying cheaper options that replicate the effects of popular long-haul destinations. Social media plays a crucial role, influencing 45% of travelers to explore trending destinations, such as Albania, dubbed the Maldives of Europe.
Optimizing annual leave with punchy, short-duration trips is another emerging trend, with 64% of respondents taking advantage of off-peak travel to minimize time off, opting for 24-hour round trips. The allure lies in eliminating accommodation costs (39%), the flexibility of last-minute trips (35%), and the opportunity to explore a new city while enjoying their own bed (35%).
The desire for unique and exciting travel experiences is evident, with 47% expressing a preference for brave and adventurous breaks, followed closely by those seeking unique (42%) experiences. A survey of 2,000 people indicates that 45% are environmentally conscious, considering their carbon footprint when traveling abroad. To travel more sustainably, 60% would pack light carry-ons instead of booking hold luggage, and 59% would purchase essentials like toiletries at their destination. Additionally, 59% are open to renting outfits and equipment, such as ski gear, upon arrival.
