With teams hailing from 40 different high schools, predominantly from Michigan but also representing Minnesota and various other states, the competition transforms LSSU into a bustling hub of youthful energy and creative ingenuity. Participants, immersed in the spirit of camaraderie and competition, devote months to crafting and refining their robotic creations, gearing up to tackle an array of meticulously planned challenges.

FIRST Robotics, an acronym for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Math, embodies a global movement aimed at nurturing the next generation of robotics enthusiasts and engineers. By organizing competitions and events worldwide, FIRST empowers students to explore the realms of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), cultivating a passion for innovation and problem-solving.

High school students affiliated with their local robotics teams seize the opportunity to engage with FIRST, channeling their talents and energies into the development of sophisticated robots primed for the challenges ahead. Over the course of two months, these budding engineers collaborate tirelessly, enhancing their robots’ capabilities and adapting to evolving competition requirements. For LSSU, hosting regional matches for FIRST Robotics for the sixth consecutive year underscores its commitment to fostering educational excellence and community engagement. Rachel Bertram, representing the Superior Robotics team from Houghton, highlights the collaborative nature of the competition, emphasizing the diverse array of solutions devised by participating teams. Bela Soderquist, a member of the Great Lakers team from Mackinac Island, underscores the diversity of approaches adopted by teams, attributing the competition’s allure to its capacity to foster innovation and individuality. Despite being presented with identical challenges, robots exhibit distinct characteristics, embodying the creativity and ingenuity of their creators.
