Madhavan Menon of Thomas Cook India spoke about the current state of India’s tourism industry and the probable impact of the latest round of relief measures on business.
When asked about Thomas Cook’s holiday-now-pay-later scheme, Mr. Menon said that they are obviously not the ones who are financing this arrangement and they have a partner who is experienced in giving loans to people. They will follow their processes and policies and identify a customer who appears good enough for them. Once that process is done, they would undertake the booking and as soon as the customer as decided agreed between the lender and the customer. Thomas Cook is a facilitator in this process and is not taking any risk from their end.
Mr. Menon said that the domestic market is attracting lot of interest from potential customers. There is interest in both travel now and pay later. He said that Thomas Cook is seeing a lot of interest in TravShield. The three destinations that are grabbing early interest are Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Mr. Menon said that over the next couple of months, other destinations within India would also open up. Dubai and the Maldives will also reopen earlier than a lot of other markets.
Switzerland also said that they would start issuing short term visas again to Indian nationals. Mr. Menon said that his expectation is that over the next month or so, there would be a flurry of announcements by various countries about reopening. And India is not going to be an exception either.
