Vienna is lovely all year round with its imperial charm and magnificent buildings. Yet, if you visit the city in winter, you will experience a truly stunning aura. Numerous Christmas markets, or Weihnachtsmärkte, dot the beautiful, romantic city at the end of November. The most beautiful squares are transformed into idyllic Christmas towns.

There are tonnes of mouth watering delicacies and artisan crafts on sale at the stalls. With the strong scent of gingerbread and mulled wine in the air, to warm yourself in the cold weather, all you need is a mug of wine.

Viennese Dream Christmas Market
For those looking to get into the holiday spirit, the Viennese Dream Christmas Market in front of the City Hall is a must-see attraction. The distinctive setting lends this market its particular appeal, and the mouthwatering aromas will no doubt lull all guests into the spirit of the season. Children can learn how to create Christmas cookies or candles in a special area on the first level of City Hall that is designated for them. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, you can also enjoy free admission while listening to foreign choirs sing Christmas songs.

Christmas Village Belvedere Palace
The most magnificent Christmas markets may be those with palatial settings, where you may enjoy mulled wine beneath marbled imperial splendour. Step forward the Christmas market (Weihnachtsdorf) at Belvedere. Explore the baroque way of life and customary crafts. The historic residence, one of Vienna’s most stunning and significant landmarks, serves as the exquisite baroque background for the well-liked Christmas Village Belvedere Palace. In addition to traditional handcrafted goods, spectacular Christmas decorations, and unique culinary treats, the market’s more than 40 festively decorated stalls are also available.

Schönbrunn Christmas Market
No street markings or garish signs can detract from the historical vista more than the atmosphere at the Schönbrunn Christmas market. Instead, the façade of the palace is illuminated with silver and gold lights that call to tired travellers. As a result, although the Belvedere market also has a palace setting, the Schönbrunn market is arguably the most aristocratic of the Viennese Christmas markets. A large courtyard is surrounded by dozens of stalls that offer booth after booth of high-quality arts and crafts produced in the studios of candle makers, glass blowers, wood carvers, metal smiths, potters, needle-workers, and other artists and artisans.

Christmas Village Campus University of Vienna
Since its inception in 1999, the University of Vienna’s Christmas village has become renowned and adored throughout the world for its warm and welcoming environment. Since 1999, a brand-new Christmas village with over 50 stands has been on display. Its motto, “STERREICH (ER)LEBEN,” welcomes guests to learn about and engage with the regions, culture, and joie de vivre of Austria. The Christmas village is transformed by artisans and companies from all across Austria into an extraordinary world of indulgence, pampering, and adventure where visitors may experience and enjoy the typical Austrian Christmas in all of its manifestations.

Spittelberg Christmas Market
The Christmas market in and around Spittelberg, a neighbourhood in Vienna’s 7th district with a mix of winding lanes, art galleries, antique shops, organic grocers, and similar businesses, completes the list of Christmas markets in Vienna. A restored Biedermeier neighbourhood with small side streets is called the Spittelberg.

At the Christmas Market at Spittelberg, you may find decorative items, pottery, cosy sweaters, rugs, and jewellery made of brass, silver, and enamel throughout the holiday season.

Since it encircles Stephansdom, this Christmas market is about as central as they get. After meandering through Vienna’s pedestrian-only centre, you may refresh at the market with the cathedral serving as a beautiful backdrop. The background is made up of townhouses and other structures from Mozart’s era, including the spectacular gothic church with its mosaic roof, whose old residence is just a street away.
