Travel And Tour World spoke with Majed Ishaq, the Palestine Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ Director of Marketing, at FITUR.

Travel And Tour World: Could you elaborate on Palestinian tourism?

Majed Ishaq: Absolutely, the ongoing conflict has notably impacted tourism, with many hesitant about visiting. However, rest assured, significant efforts are being made to ensure safety and stability for our visitors. We’re striving to create a welcoming environment, particularly in the West Bank area, where guests can explore the historical and cultural richness of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and beyond. It’s a priority for us to help people feel secure in their travels here.

Travel And Tour World: What is the Palestinian government’s plan for drawing tourists to Palestine?

Majed Ishaq: Indeed, Palestine stands as perhaps the most ancient destination for travelers, a testament to our adaptability in the face of ongoing occupation. This necessity for flexibility shapes our approach to showcasing the unique allure of Destination Palestine, anchored in the historic and spiritual heart of Jerusalem. Sites like the Church of the Holy Sepulchre offer pilgrims and visitors alike a profound journey through the paths once trodden by prophets. Bethlehem, at its core, further enriches this narrative, inviting exploration into the birthplace of pivotal historical and religious figures.

Our current efforts are intensively focused on crafting and sharing narratives that illuminate the holy significance of Palestine, its deep-rooted history, and the resilience and diversity of its people. Despite the challenges we face, it’s crucial to convey that Palestine is a land of warmth and hospitality, offering a secure and welcoming experience to all who venture here. Our commitment lies in ensuring that the beauty and sanctity of Palestine, along with the hospitality and safety it offers, are recognized and appreciated worldwide.

Travel And Tour World: Could you tell us about any sustainable tourism methods you employ in Palestine?

Majed Ishaq: Certainly, we’re closely aligning with UNWTO’s guidelines for sustainable tourism development, mindful of our unique circumstances under occupation. Despite these challenges, we’re committed to implementing sustainable practices in the near future, striving for progress within our constraints.

Travel And Tour World: What is your take on FITUR?

Majed Ishaq: Since 1997, our consistent participation in this exhibition reflects not just a commitment but a bridge of communication, especially in the shadow of challenging conditions back home. The presence of Palestine here, amidst concerns of unrest, serves a vital purpose. It’s about offering clarity, sharing the current realities on the ground, and maintaining a dialogue with our numerous partners worldwide, including those in Spain. Our global network is keen on receiving the latest updates, as there’s a genuine interest among various groups to visit and experience Palestine, and immerse themselves in its rich cultural tapestry. Unfortunately, prevailing conditions often deter such plans. By being here, we aim to provide accurate, firsthand information about life in Palestine, ensuring that the true story, our narrative as a people facing unique challenges, is heard and understood.

Travel And Tour World: What are Palestine’s MICE facilities?

Majed Ishaq: Indeed, MICE tourism in Palestine is quite a specialized segment, primarily because our main visitors are those drawn to the spiritual significance of the Holy Land. Our focus largely centers on Christian pilgrims and Muslim groups who wish to explore sacred sites like Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Jericho, among others. Currently, our infrastructure to support MICE tourism is in a phase of development. Participating in events like this offers valuable insights and learning opportunities to enhance our offerings in this area.
