In a significant disruption to transportation in southwest England, a major landslip above the Crewkerne Tunnel in Somerset has resulted in extensive delays for both trains and motorists. The severe rainfall in the region has triggered safety concerns, compelling Network Rail engineers to embark on a week-long repair mission.

The landslip, a consequence of the relentless wet weather, has not only led to the closure of some roads but also severely impacted train services. Trains operating on the affected rail line are expected to face delays for an extended period due to the extensive repair work required.

Network Rail engineers are currently working tirelessly to address the aftermath of the landslip, which occurred above the Crewkerne Tunnel. The challenging terrain necessitated engineers to abseil down to the affected area to assess and initiate repairs. The operation involves the removal of approximately 100 tonnes of clay, soil, and vegetation from around the tunnel entrance to stabilize the cutting.

Despite the reopening of some roads and the resumption of normal services, Network Rail and South Western Railway (SWR) are advising against travel between Salisbury and Exeter until Monday, December 11. Flash flooding has prompted the closure of the A303 between Cartgate and Sparkford, adding to the travel woes in the region.

SWR is unable to operate services between Salisbury and Exeter St David’s during this period. The rail replacement bus services are also affected by severe flooding, compounding the travel challenges for commuters.

Matt Pocock, Network Rail Wessex route director, expressed apologies for the disruption caused by the landslip, emphasizing the safety risks associated with the situation. The sustained heavy rain, exceeding 90mm in the past 48 hours, triggered earth movement above the tunnel entrance, necessitating urgent action to prevent potential hazards to passenger services.

Motorists have also been significantly impacted, with the closure of the A303 exacerbating travel difficulties. National Highways established a road closure between Cartgate and Sparkford, affecting the eastbound lane. Although some lanes have reopened, further challenges are anticipated on Thursday, December 7, with heavy rain forecasted and a weather warning covering most of Somerset.

South Western Railway’s Performance and Planning Director, Steve Tyler, acknowledged the disruption’s impact on customers in the lead-up to Christmas and indicated efforts to explore limited alternative services between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction via Westbury.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of the landslip, travelers are advised to stay updated on the latest developments through official channels.
