Indonesia’s tourism sector surged in 2025 as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Singapore led visitor growth, driving over 11 million arrivals, boosted by stronger air links, spending, and regional travel demand.

Indonesia’s tourism industry is marking a robust recovery, recording 11.43 million foreign tourist arrivals from January to September 2025 — a 10.22 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS). This significant growth underscores the country’s strengthened global appeal and continued efforts to position itself as a leading travel destination in Southeast Asia.

The sustained rebound in tourism reflects a combination of factors, including the country’s strategic promotional campaigns, improved air connectivity, and the steady reopening of major global markets. The increase also highlights Indonesia’s resilience in the post-pandemic era, supported by strong demand from regional neighbors such as Malaysia, Australia, and Singapore — which together accounted for nearly 40 percent of total arrivals during the period.

Strong Visitor Spending and Economic Impact

The third quarter of 2025 saw an impressive rise in average spending per foreign visitor, reaching US$1,297, up from US$1,199 in the same quarter of 2024. This growth in expenditure demonstrates a shift toward higher-value tourism and more diversified travel experiences across the archipelago.

Accommodation emerged as the top spending category, comprising 37.31 percent of total expenditure, followed by food and beverages at 19.4 percent, shopping and souvenirs at 10.98 percent, and entertainment at 8.78 percent. This pattern indicates a healthy spread of economic benefits across different sectors, reinforcing tourism’s role as a vital contributor to Indonesia’s national revenue and employment.

Key Source Markets and Entry Points

Malaysia led the list of top tourist source countries, accounting for 19.53 percent of total arrivals. This was followed by Australia at 11.72 percent and Singapore at 8.55 percent. These three markets continue to play a pivotal role in sustaining Indonesia’s inbound travel momentum.

Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, and Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam remained the principal gateways for international visitors. The steady traffic through these airports reflects the country’s ongoing infrastructure investments and efficient management in facilitating global connectivity.

Tourism Resilience Across Regions

Hotel performance data also indicates consistent tourism demand. BPS reported that the room occupancy rate for star-rated hotels reached 50.16 percent nationwide in September 2025. Provinces such as Bali, South Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan recorded occupancy levels above 53 percent, signaling balanced regional tourism growth beyond traditional hotspots.

This sustained demand also points to the diversification of Indonesia’s tourism offerings — from Bali’s luxury resorts and Lombok’s eco-adventures to Kalimantan’s cultural tourism and Sumatra’s emerging nature-based attractions.

Outbound Travel on the Rise

In addition to growing inbound arrivals, Indonesians themselves are increasingly traveling abroad. BPS recorded 695.9 thousand outbound trips in September 2025, a 5.25 percent year-on-year rise. The most visited destinations included Malaysia (28.92 percent), Saudi Arabia (18.77 percent), and Singapore (13.09 percent). This rise in outbound travel reflects stronger consumer confidence, economic stability, and improved international flight options.

Ambitious Tourism Goals for 2025

As a vital foreign exchange earner, Indonesia’s tourism sector remains a cornerstone of national development. The government has set an ambitious target of attracting between 14.6 million and 16 million foreign visitors by the end of 2025. With continued investment in tourism infrastructure, digital marketing, and sustainability initiatives, Indonesia is well-positioned to achieve this goal while enhancing visitor satisfaction and promoting responsible travel.

Looking ahead, Indonesia’s focus on high-quality, sustainable tourism — coupled with its unmatched diversity of landscapes, culture, and hospitality — is expected to further strengthen its position as one of Asia’s most vibrant and competitive travel destinations.
