In spite of the reports that the tourism industry of Malaysia is on the repair phase in 2022, after the change to the endemic and the border reopening of the country, tourism still is in dearth in terms of positive figures to speed up the recovery process.
When Ganneesh Ramaa was asked, who is the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Vice President inbound and domestic, said that some of Malaysia’s prominent tourist markets are still under lockdown situation, mostly China, Taiwan and Japan.
Also Ramaa mentioned that it’s quite early to hypothesize that the number of tourists to Malaysia are getting better following the reopening of the borders.
On the other hand, The Russia-Ukraine war will manipulate the world tourism scenario to a good extent as it has increased inflation in some countries of Europe. Also, this will impact the disposable income of the common people, and it will contribute to their travel choices directly, as told to the media.
Ramaa stated that in 2021, domestic travel sector has resumed. Based on the domestic sales produced at the previous MATTA Fair, travel agencies however think that business recovery is on the right track.
Also, MATTA anticipates that domestic small and medium-sized companies linked to tourism to record better income and revenue because of border reopening and festive seasons.
Regardless of the positive domestic travel sales, the tourist and hospitality sectors in Malaysia are decreasing in size due to the Zero-COVID policy of China and fears existing among travellers.
To Malaysia’s tourism arrivals China plays a major role. China’s tourism recovery has slowed since mid-2021, as per a recent report, and in 2022, it will remain unstable due to travel restrictions in the middle of resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
