During one of its busiest times of the year, spring break, McGhee Tyson Airport has been recognized for its operational excellence, ranking second nationally for the most on-time flights. A spokesperson for the airport revealed that in February, an impressive 89.89% of flights operated on schedule, marking the airport’s highest position ever in terms of air service reliability according to AirHelp, the leading air passenger rights organization.
This analysis considered various flight disruptions, including delays, cancellations, and diversions, across U.S. airports handling over 1,000 flights in the given month.
The Knoxville airport is witnessing unprecedented traffic, with a record 2.8 million passengers in 2023, and is currently undergoing expansions to accommodate future growth. Initiatives include a significant terminal expansion and the construction of a new six-story parking garage.
The summer schedule is expected to introduce seven new flights, with an overall increase in seating capacity by as much as 40%, including a notable rise in premium seating options. Aviation consultant William Swelbar’s report highlighted a 56.2% increase in premium seats since 2022, demonstrating airline confidence in the airport’s growth trajectory.
The airport’s on-time performance stands out even more when considering the broader context of flight punctuality across the country. For instance, Savannah/Hilton Head Airport barely edged out McGhee Tyson with a 90.17% on-time performance rate.
In contrast, several airports, particularly in Florida, faced significant delays, affecting many spring break travelers. Notably, McGhee Tyson provides connections to five of the most delay-prone airports, including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Denver, Miami, Harry Reid (Las Vegas), and Orlando International, showcasing the Knoxville airport’s reliability amidst a broader landscape of travel disruptions.
This distinction not only highlights McGhee Tyson Airport’s operational efficiency but also signals promising growth and service enhancement, especially in premium seating. As airlines continue to invest in the airport, expecting revenue growth and improved service, McGhee Tyson’s status as a pivotal aviation hub is set to rise, offering passengers both reliability and enhanced travel experiences amidst ongoing expansions.
