Melbourne Airport has achieved a groundbreaking feat among Australian capital city airports by surpassing its pre-pandemic international capacity. In December, the airport will offer more than 1.31 million seats for international travellers, exceeding the 2019 capacity of 1.29 million seats by 101%.

This achievement coincides with the return of Aircalin after a hiatus of over three years, marking the reintroduction of services between Melbourne and Noumea. Aircalin will operate three weekly flights using a new Airbus A320Neo, allowing passengers to connect to various islands such as Lifou, Isle of Pines, or Ouvea on a single ticket.

Lorie Argus, CEO of Melbourne Airport, credited this international milestone to the collective effort of the airport team over the years. She acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Victorian government in supporting the airport to attract more airlines and aviation activity.

With the return of Aircalin, Melbourne Airport now hosts 36 international airlines, similar to the pre-pandemic level. Argus expressed optimism about further expanding this number in the near future, particularly emphasizing the anticipated popularity of flights to tropical destinations like New Caledonia among Victorians.

Argus highlighted that about 10% of the current international capacity is operated by new airlines or routes, offering travelers and exporters increased options in flight schedules and destinations. She emphasized that this expansion could potentially ease the cost of airfares, addressing the rising cost of living pressures faced by passengers.

Additionally, Argus advocated for a revision of Bilateral Air Service Agreements toward open skies policies, believing it would encourage airlines to expand their operations into Melbourne.

Minister for Tourism, Sport, and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos, applauded this milestone, highlighting Victoria’s appeal as a captivating destination. He emphasized the significant boost these flights bring to the state’s hospitality, tourism, and local employment across various sectors.

Overall, Melbourne Airport’s achievement in surpassing pre-pandemic international capacity reflects not only a milestone for the airport but also promises broader economic benefits and increased tourism for Victoria.
