Met Office gives verdict on August as violent storms set to strike

It’s safe to say the UK has had a fairly miserable summer so far, with temperatures lower than average and conditions unseasonably wet – all while the rest of Europe is suffering under dangerous heatwaves.

Now the Met Office has issued its verdict on how August is shaping up and unfortunately Brits can expect yet more wind, rain and unpredictable conditions.

What’s more, a weather system drifting over the Atlantic could batter Britain with thunder and lightning this weekend, a newspaper reports.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will get the worst of it from early on Saturday morning, but by mid-afternoon the following day a large band of rain will blanket the majority of the British Isles.

A Met Office spokesperson said that the weekend weather will be dominated by an area of low pressure pushing into the north west of the UK on Saturday bringing a risk of heavy rain to Northern Ireland and north west Scotland for the start of the weekend.

These showers could at times include a risk of hail and thunder and strengthening winds. There is likely to be some rain or showers possible across the far South East of England for a time later in the day.

On Sunday the showers will again be heavy at times, and slow moving with a continued risk of thunder storms, especially for parts of Scotland.

Rain or showers also expected to push into South West areas of England through the afternoon.

Its long range forecast says August is likely to start generally unsettled, with showers and outbreaks of rain, these perhaps turning heavy and thundery at times.

Changeable conditions are expected to continue through the week with a mixture of sunshine and showers, as well as spells of rain across the UK.

The wettest conditions are likely to be across the west, while the southeast is likely to see the best of any drier interludes.

A similar set up is possible through the following week, with northwestern parts of the UK seeing majority of unsettled conditions.

There is a chance for winds to be strong at times, given the time of the year, especially in western areas.

Temperatures are likely to remain below average, with chance of mild nights towards later.

There’s some hope for better weather in the second half of August, however, with the Met Office adding that there is a increasing possibility towards late August, of a greater incidence of short spells of more settled and warmer weather with lighter winds.
