Two October weekends bring a festival atmosphere to Whitefish

The Great Northwest Oktoberfest takes place in Depot Park in downtown Whitefish. The event opens from 5pm to 11pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Saturday sessions run from noon to 11pm.
The first weekend opens on Thursday, 1 October. The second begins on Thursday, 8 October. This two-weekend format gives visitors more choice. It also helps Whitefish stretch its autumn visitor season, when cool air, colourful trees and mountain views make the town especially appealing.
The Whitefish Chamber of Commerce is behind the event. It presents Oktoberfest as a chance for residents and travellers to relax, meet friends and enjoy a joyful autumn evening. The festival will use a large Bigtop tent and an outdoor beer garden at Depot Park.

Entry rules make the festival easy for families and groups

Admission costs US$10 and tickets are sold at the gate on the day. Children aged 12 and under can enter free when they are with a parent. The organisers say there is space for festival-goers under the tent and at the park.

Music will be at the centre of the festival. The first weekend will feature The MAC-toberfest Band. This group brings together performers from the Montana Artist Collective. It will play four sets each night from 5:30pm to 10:30pm between 1 and 3 October.
The second weekend will welcome Bavarski. The band comes from northern New Jersey and is known for high-energy Oktoberfest music. Its sound blends German, Slovenian and Polish-American styles with rock, jazz and modern influences. Bavarski will play from 5:30pm to 10:30pm from 8 to 10 October.
The Bavarian Echoes will perform on both Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm. The Flathead Valley’s 20-piece Bavarian orchestra will play German tunes, polkas and waltzes. Their Saturday performances add a traditional sound to the family-friendly daytime sessions.

Beer, food and local flavours give visitors plenty to explore

The beer menu joins classic German styles with Montana brewing. Hofbräu beers will include Oktoberfest, Dunkel, Original Lager and Hefeweizen. Bayern Brewing of Missoula will pour Bayern Oktoberfest, Montana Original Light Lager, St Walter Hefeweizen and Pilsener Lager.
The festival will also offer wine, cider, hard seltzer, non-alcoholic beer, water and soft drinks. This makes the event more welcoming for visitors who do not drink beer.
Food choices will go beyond traditional German fare. The food court will include American, Mexican and Eastern European options. Confirmed vendors include NW Island Noodles, Piroshki Palace, KnucklHed BBQ, The Corndog House, Posh & Yob, Sodalightful and Mountain Culture Creamery. The mix gives groups and families a wider choice during a long festival day.

Contests turn spectators into part of the show

The festival is not only about watching a band or enjoying a drink. Visitors can take part in stein-holding, log-sawing and keg-hurling contests. The contests are free to enter. People can sign up near the stage about 30 minutes before most events begin.
Children will have their own Chicken Dance Championships on both Saturdays. The contest is scheduled for 3pm on 3 October and 10 October. No sign-up is required.
A special Hop Queen Pageant will add extra theatre to the second weekend. The qualifier will take place on 7 October from 6pm to 8pm at Logan’s Bar at Grouse Mountain Lodge. The finals and crowning will follow on the Oktoberfest main stage on 8 October. The new Hop Queen will represent the festival at local community events.
The biggest contest comes on 10 October. The Oktoberfest Stein-Holding Championships will begin at 9pm. Top stein-holders from across the western United States will compete for the Kevin Collom Cup.
