More than 700,000 international tourists visited Iceland in 2021, compared to 2020 figures, during which the Nordic country welcomed 486,000 international travelers.
In 2019, before the Coronavirus outbreak, there were more than 2 million international visitors in Iceland.
In this regard, the head of the Icelandic Tourist Board (Ferðamálastofa), SkarphéðinnSteinarsson has stressed that the number of businesses in the travel sector didn’t make a significant change during last year, and few companies in the travel sector underwent difficulties like suspension of payments last year, while a third of the companies witnessed a profit in 2020.
“2020 was expected to be terrible, but the situation isn’t any worse than this. On the other hand, debts are increasing, and owners’ equity is decreasing,” Steinarssonpointed out.
However, as per a report published by Visir, the number of tourists in Iceland during this year is expected to double, and the country might welcome 1.3 million tourists, while in 2023, the number is expected to be 1.5 million. The figures are based on the fact that Iceland is highly popular among international travelers.
Previously, in a report published by High North News, more than 75,000 tourists visited Iceland in November 2021.
