Despite the challenges posed by volcanic eruptions, Iceland has managed to maintain travel continuity, even amidst seven eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula over the last three years. Historical data suggests that the chances of these eruptions significantly disrupting travel remain low, offering reassurance to travelers and the travel industry alike.

The Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, which caused considerable air travel disruptions across Europe due to its explosive nature and ash production, remains a stark memory for many. However, the eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula have been of a different nature – effusive fissure eruptions. These eruptions produce calm lava flows with minimal ash and gas, posing less threat to air travel.

Although Keflavík International Airport and the main highway to Reykjavík have remained open during past eruptions, certain local tourist attractions like the Blue Lagoon may experience temporary closures. The recent eruptions have also brought concerns for the community of Grindavík, leading to evacuations and advisories against unnecessary travel near the eruption sites.

As of the latest eruption on March 16, which is still active, there have been no indications that it will impact the greater capital area. Travelers planning to visit Iceland are encouraged to stay informed through reliable sources, including the Icelandic Met Office for earthquake and volcanic activity updates, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration for road conditions, Safe Travel for travel-related information, and Isavia for updates on Keflavík International Airport operations.

This situation underscores the importance of preparedness and the ability of Iceland’s infrastructure to manage natural events effectively, ensuring minimal disruption to both travelers and residents.
