In a historic development for Mossley, Greater Manchester, a fully accessible railway station is on the horizon for the first time since its inception in 1849, thanks to the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) initiative.
The project aims to shift Mossley station approximately 300 meters eastward from its current position, introducing a series of enhancements designed to modernize the travel experience. Key features of the new station include an accessible footbridge equipped with lifts, extended platforms to accommodate longer trains offering additional seating, and a comprehensive electrification of the railway through Mossley to facilitate cleaner and faster travel.
Scheduled for completion by the decade’s end, this initiative is a segment of the extensive TRU project that spans from Manchester to York. This ambitious upgrade is poised to deliver a more sustainable and efficient travel option for the region.
Jonathan Reynolds MP has expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the long-standing campaign for a station that meets the modern needs of accessibility and inclusivity. He emphasized the transformational impact of the new station on Mossley’s connectivity for employment, education, and leisure purposes, urging the community to anticipate short-term disruptions for long-term benefits.
Despite the changes, the historic essence of the existing Mossley Station will be preserved, with plans to retain the station building and maintain the car park to manage any overflow challenges from the new station.
The TRU’s commitment to community engagement is evident, with plans for a public consultation to discuss the future of both the current and forthcoming station sites.
Neil Holm, TRU’s Managing Director, underscored the project’s dedication to addressing accessibility challenges, promising a significant improvement in the railway’s accessibility, environmental impact, and reliability. The upcoming public consultation will provide an opportunity for community input on the project’s direction.
Further details regarding the TRU’s plans for Mossley will be disclosed to the public later in the year, marking a significant step forward in making travel more accessible and efficient for the residents of Greater Manchester.
