Today, Boeing and Royal Brunei Airlines disclosed that the airline has committed to acquiring four 787 Dreamliners as part of its initiative to modernize its widebody fleet. The decision to opt for the 787-9 underscores Royal Brunei Airlines’ dedication to its long-term expansion objectives, sustainability targets, and prioritization of passenger comfort.

“The forthcoming arrival of the 787-9 Dreamliner symbolizes a bold step forward in our ongoing journey toward innovation and excellence,” said Sabirin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines. “Royal Brunei Airlines has been operating the 787-8 for the last 10 years and this order will ensure we continue with a product that our customers have come to enjoy. In our constant effort to offer unparalleled service matched with the highest safety standards to our guests, the new fleet will allow us the potential to tap into new growth areas, strengthening our market appeal and enabling us to provide a superior travel experience to our guests.”

Over a decade ago, Royal Brunei Airlines made history as the pioneer Southeast Asian carrier to introduce the 787 Dreamliner to its fleet. With the recent finalization of their order for the 787-9, slated to be recorded in Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries, the airline is poised to expand its capacity to accommodate more passengers and cargo over longer distances, all while enhancing operational efficiency.

“By renewing its investment in the 787 Dreamliner, Royal Brunei Airlines will continue to connect Brunei with the world while offering the carrier’s signature service and comfort to passengers,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “The 787-9 will deliver the versatility, efficiency and range that Royal Brunei Airlines desires to pursue increasing air travel and tourism opportunities.”

Currently, Royal Brunei Airlines manages a collection of five 787-8 aircraft, serving diverse destinations spanning Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom. To meet the increasing demand on medium- and long-haul routes, the airline has decided to introduce the 787-9, offering approximately 20% more seating capacity and an extended range of 14,010 km (7,565 nautical miles).

According to Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook, Southeast Asia is projected to experience a 6.9% annual growth in fleet size, with around 4,300 aircraft deliveries anticipated over the next two decades. Royal Brunei Airlines’ recent order for additional 787 aircraft underscores the rising demand for widebody aircraft in the region.

The 787 family boasts enhanced comfort features, including improved cabin humidity, lower cabin altitude, and turbulence-mitigating technology. Furthermore, these Dreamliner aircraft are designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25% compared to their predecessors.
