New road linking Antique and Iloilo provinces opens, promising a significant boost to tourism in Barangay Aningalan, San Remigio, and reducing travel time.

The inauguration of a new thoroughfare linking the provinces of Antique and Iloilo is expected to significantly invigorate the tourism sector, particularly benefiting Barangay Aningalan in San Remigio. This recently completed route, extending from Iloilo City through several municipalities including Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal, and Tubungan in Iloilo and culminating in Aningalan, has dramatically reduced travel time to what is affectionately known as the “Little Baguio” of Antique, according to Mayor Margarito Mission, Jr.

Mayor Mission, Jr., in a recent dialogue, highlighted that the journey from Iloilo City to Aningalan, which previously took approximately three hours, can now be completed in about one and a half hours owing to the road’s opening. This development is particularly noteworthy as it provides a swift and direct route to Aningalan, bypassing the longer route via Hamtic town. The significance of this new road was underscored by its timing, opening just before Holy Week, thereby offering tourists a serene and cooler alternative destination to escape the season’s heat.

While specific tourist numbers for the period following the road’s inauguration remain unquantified, Mayor Mission, Jr., suggested that Aningalan may have witnessed record-high visitations. Furthermore, the new route is touted as a safer alternative to the frequently landslide-affected path between Hamtic, Antique, and San Joaquin.

The collaborative effort between Mayor Mission and Miag-ao, Iloilo Mayor Oscar “Richard” Garin Jr. was highlighted during their inspection of the remaining unpaved 1.6 kilometers of road within the Iloilo segment on March 24. This partnership underscored a united front in addressing the infrastructural needs of the region, with a special appeal made to Iloilo’s First District Rep. Janette Garin to assist in the final clearing and graveling efforts of the road.
