The job market in the UAE’s travel and tourism industry has approached pre-pandemic levels as the ‘revenge travel’ that started when Covid-19 restrictions were released has delivered a much-needed boost to the country’s main sector. The UAE was one of the first nations to reopen its economy to foreign tourists following Covid-19, which significantly benefited the travel and tourism industry’s revival.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) predict that the number of jobs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi has reached 305,000 in 2022, the same level as before the epidemic. In comparison, 273,000 people were engaged in the industry in 2021, thus, creating 32,000 jobs last year.

Dubai’s popularity as a global tourism destination has skyrocketed in recent years. For the second year in a row, Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards named it the greatest holiday destination in the world for 2023, and it was voted the second most attractive city for tourists in 2022 by Euromonitor.

According to Dubai Economy and Tourism, the number of international visitors jumped over 97 per cent to 14.36 million in 2022, but lower than 2019 figures of 16.73 million.

“City destinations in the UAE continue to grow in popularity for travellers from around the world.

Although these key cities were heavily affected by the pandemic, they have shown incredible resilience and signs of growth. The UAE’s travel and tourism sector is on the road to recovery, demonstrative of the wide appeal tourist destinations across the region continue to hold for international travellers,” said Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC.

“But it’s crucial that the national and local governments continue to recognise the economic importance of travel and tourism for the local and national economies, jobs and businesses,” said Simpson.
