The airline has unveiled its new menu, described as “a taste journey through Aotearoa,” aimed at providing passengers on all long-haul flights departing from New Zealand with a unique gastronomic experience. Highlighting dishes such as confit potato with onion crème fraîche whip and chives, and Mānuka smoked rye sourdough, the menu aims to celebrate the best of New Zealand’s regional produce.

Leanne Geraghty, the airline’s chief customer and sales officer, in a conversation with 1News, emphasized that the menu’s objective is to introduce visitors to the exceptional and unique flavors of New Zealand, leveraging ingredients from local businesses like Duck Island, Daily Bread, and Molly Woppy. Geraghty noted the distinct challenges of creating food that retains its appeal in-flight, acknowledging the necessity to adjust for changes in taste and texture due to altitude.

Geraghty expressed her belief in the significant improvement of aeroplane food in recent years, highlighting the airline’s efforts to enhance their culinary offerings. The introduction of new in-flight snacks such as gingerbread and Snackachangi chips further reflects this commitment to elevating passengers’ dining experiences.

Regarding meals across different travel classes, Geraghty shared that while both economy and premium meals are refreshed biannually for long-haul flights, there is no crossover of premium meals to economy class. Nevertheless, the update of snacks across all cabins last year signifies an attempt to ensure a consistently high-quality experience for all passengers. Economy class menus now feature dishes like miso chicken with rice and seasonal vegetables, alongside various snacks and breakfast options including fresh fruit salad and hotcakes with berry compote and custard.

This initiative by the airline to showcase New Zealand’s culinary heritage on a global stage through its long-haul flight menus not only enhances the travel experience for international visitors but also serves as a testament to the country’s rich gastronomic culture.
