The commencement of the trial operations for the Noida International Airport is on the horizon, scheduled to begin by the end of June, following the near completion of 80% of the initial phase of this ambitious project. The Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), the entity overseeing the construction of this new greenfield airport in Jewar, has communicated this significant progress to the Uttar Pradesh government, highlighting the completion of the runway and the overall advancement of the project.

Arun Vir Singh, the CEO of NIAL, in discussions with HT, outlined the plans for the remaining installations, including critical technical equipment, which are expected to be in place within the next three months. These preparations set the stage for the trial operations on the runway to commence towards the end of June or early July, with the ultimate goal of initiating flight operations by the end of September 2024.

The financial investment in the greenfield airport thus far has reached approximately Rs 7,371.51 crore, a substantial portion of the total allocated budget of Rs 10,056 crore, according to NIAL’s reports.

Focusing on the essential infrastructure, NIAL officials have indicated that installation of flight-related equipment on the runway and the air traffic control (ATC) tower is scheduled for April 2024. This follows the completion of the civil work on the ATC, with the final touches currently being applied.

Enhancing Connectivity for Improved Travel and Tourism

To ensure the Noida International Airport is seamlessly integrated into the region’s transport network, the Uttar Pradesh government has instructed local authorities, including NIAL and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), to prioritize the development of transport links to and from the airport. This directive aims to bolster the airport’s accessibility, thereby enhancing its appeal to travelers and contributing positively to the travel and tourism sector.

YEIDA has engaged the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to draft a detailed project report, laying the groundwork for a Metro line that will serve the airport. Beyond traditional metro connectivity, there are plans to explore innovative transportation solutions, such as pod taxis and a rapid rail corridor, to further weave the airport into the fabric of the National Capital Region (NCR). These developments promise not only to streamline access to the airport but also to significantly boost the region’s tourism and travel industry by providing convenient and efficient travel options.
