Startup discount airline Norse Atlantic Airways has received an air operator’s certificate from the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority, an important landmark in the company’s plan to operate transatlantic service.

Norse Atlantic said the certification was completed on December 29, keeping it on track to begin operations in the spring with flights between Oslo and the U.S.

The carrier aims to fill the void that was left by predecessor Norwegian Air, which ceased U.S. flights early in the Covid-19 pandemic.

In its September application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for a foreign air carrier permit, Norse Atlantic said its initial flights would connect Oslo with Fort Lauderdale; Ontario, Calif.; and Stewart International Airport, which is about 60 miles north of New York City.

The carrier will initially operate with a fleet of three Boeing 787 Dreamliners in a two-cabin configuration.

Norse Atlantic has said that it eventually plans to widen its European network to include other destinations, including London and Paris. The nascent carrier plans to grow its fleet to 15 Dreamliners.

The DOT must still approve the Norse Atlantic application before flights can begin.
