NYC Parks celebrate Earth Week through virtual events

New York City (NYC) Parks recently launched the ‘Parks@Home’ digital campaign in order to virtually connect people with nature during Earth Week (April 20 to 24). The initiative comes at a time when most New Yorkers are at home and the city is maintaining social distancing measures to curb the further spread of the COVID-19 virus.

NYC Parks said in an official statement that the virtual campaign extends beyond Earth Day. It said that the campaign would be the perfect solution for the ones looking to connect with nature and is interested to promote environmental awareness in a safe and responsible way. The campaign would feature live Ranger tours, meditation moments, and various other events.

On Wednesday, during the 50th-anniversary celebration of Earth Day and the entire Earth Week, NYC Parks has organised several virtual events and live broadcasts that can be accessed through their social media channels. If the weather conditions are good, live broadcasts would be airing throughout the week and will be saved on their social media pages after the live sessions.

Urban Park Rangers gave a live tour of Forest Park on April 22. They cared for baby trees and talked about measures being undertaken to ensure the health of the forest’s future. On Thursday, April 23 an “Art Activity for Kids: Recycled Flower Art Tutorial” would be posted on their channel. On April 24, Friday, Arbor Day would be celebrated through a live broadcast at noon from the Alley Pond Giant, the oldest tree in NYC. There will also be a tree-themed Meditation Moment, a part of NYC Parks’ new at-home series.

NYC Parks has more than 200 parks that have been created by transforming industrial waterfronts into scenic destinations. These parks preserve green spaces against development and turn vacant lots into vibrant parkland. During the Earth Week celebration, NYC Parks would look back at some of the public parks that have been created since the first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970.
