Women Travel Abroad Expands Global Tourism Reach Under New CEO Katherine Butler-Dines as the US-based tour operator strengthens its international presence. With nearly 300 travellers expected across 29 itineraries in 2026, the company is responding to rising demand for women-only journeys, private accommodation, personalised support and independent travel experiences worldwide.

Women Travel Abroad Accelerates International Tourism Growth

Women Travel Abroad (WTA), a United States-based tour operator specialising in women-only journeys, is entering a new phase of expansion under owner and chief executive Katherine Butler-Dines. The company is strengthening its position in the international tourism market by offering small-group holidays designed for women who want to explore destinations independently while benefiting from organised travel arrangements.

Founded in 2014, the Cincinnati-based business was acquired by Butler-Dines in September 2024. Since the acquisition, the operator has expanded its travel portfolio while maintaining an emphasis on personalised experiences, cultural discovery and smaller groups.

According to company figures, WTA welcomed approximately 150 travellers across 16 departures in 2025. It is now targeting nearly 300 guests through as many as 29 itineraries in 2026, reflecting significant anticipated growth in its operations.

Solo Female Travel Demand Creates New Tourism Opportunities

The expansion comes as independent female travel becomes an increasingly important segment of the global tourism industry.

Research cited by the company from Grand View Research values the worldwide solo travel market at approximately US$549.8 billion in 2025, with projections exceeding US$1.6 trillion by 2033. Female travellers accounted for 54.6 per cent of market revenue in 2025.

These figures indicate growing commercial opportunities for tourism businesses offering flexible, supportive and experience-led travel products.

WTA primarily serves women aged 55 and above, including travellers who prefer not to delay international holidays because friends, spouses or family members have different schedules or interests.

Approximately 90 per cent of its customers join trips independently, demonstrating the importance of organised group experiences for women travelling without familiar companions.

More Than 41 Destinations Strengthen Global Travel Connectivity

Women Travel Abroad currently offers journeys across more than 41 international destinations, providing opportunities to experience different cultures, landscapes and regional traditions.

Its portfolio includes established tourism markets such as Italy, Japan, Switzerland, Iceland, Australia and New Zealand, alongside destinations including Morocco, Egypt, Oman, South Africa, St Lucia and Patagonia.

The company organises groups of six to ten travellers, creating an alternative to conventional large-group touring.

Its itineraries combine distinctive accommodation, local guides, cultural activities and opportunities for personal exploration.

Travellers can select from five different travel styles based on their interests, preferred activities and travel pace.

This approach supports demand for meaningful destination experiences rather than tightly scheduled sightseeing programmes.

Private Accommodation Removes Common Solo Travel Costs

Accommodation expenses remain a significant consideration for travellers booking independently.

Traditional tour packages frequently impose single supplements on customers occupying rooms alone, increasing the overall holiday cost.

Women Travel Abroad addresses this issue by including private rooms for every participant without additional single supplements or compulsory roommate arrangements.

According to the 2026 Solo Female Travel Trends Survey cited in the company’s announcement, 73 per cent of women who had never travelled independently identified higher costs as a concern.

The survey also found that 76 per cent would be more likely to book an organised women-only tour.

By incorporating private accommodation into its pricing structure, WTA aims to make international group travel more straightforward for independent customers.

Safety and Personalised Support Remain Central to Operations

Traveller preparation, destination awareness and operational support form important elements of the company’s business model.

WTA provides trained hosts, specialist local guides and pre-departure assistance to help participants navigate unfamiliar destinations.

New hosts complete a six-week training programme, followed by annual refresher training.

The company also provides round-the-clock access to hosts and back-office support during journeys.

According to WTA, it operates exclusively in destinations classified under Level 1 or Level 2 of the US State Department’s travel advisory system, adjusting itineraries when circumstances change.

Before departure, participants receive scheduled communications approximately 90, 60 and 30 days ahead of their journeys.

These interactions help travellers understand practical arrangements and connect with fellow participants before meeting in person.

Katherine Butler-Dines Shapes the Company’s Next Chapter

Butler-Dines brings experience in international travel, finance, business operations and executive management.

A Georgetown University School of Foreign Service graduate, she began her travel career in Morocco and subsequently completed an MBA at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in 2023.

Before acquiring WTA, she managed a private equity-backed technology company.

In January 2024, Butler-Dines and her husband and business partner, Rahul Desai, began searching for an acquisition opportunity. After assessing more than 80 businesses, they purchased Women Travel Abroad in September that year.

She has also established Affinity Travel Co., a holding company intended to develop a portfolio of specialised travel businesses.

Her strategy centres on expanding departures while preserving the intimate group sizes, individual accommodation and personalised service that distinguish WTA.

For the wider tourism industry, the company’s development illustrates how specialised operators can respond to changing traveller expectations through targeted experiences and flexible holiday formats.

Women Travel Abroad’s expansion highlights growing opportunities in international tourism as more women choose independent journeys supported by small groups. Under Katherine Butler-Dines, the company aims to increase departures while maintaining personalised services, private accommodation and destination expertise, strengthening its position within the evolving global female travel market.
