Taking cognizance of a research work by the National Council of Applied Economic Research which predicted that the tourism sector in India till 2026 would not be able to recuperate its pre-pandemic levels, a Parliamentary panel has highlighted that Indian missions overseas must guarantee advancement and marketing of tourist destinations and products in an effective way.

In a recent report, the Standing Panel on Tourism, Transport and Culture suggested this after detecting that there were 10.93 million tourist arrivals from abroad in India during 2019 i.e., the pre-pandemic year, nonetheless the current numbers of FTA are still well underneath the pre-pandemic levels.

On being informed by the Ministry of External Affairs representatives, the committee that the officers of tourism who are posted in Indian missions in overseas countries have tourism promotion as supplementary responsibility, suggested that as accountability for tourism promotion abroad at present rests with the Indian missions solely, the tourism officers might be entrusted with sole charge as far as possible as it’s essential for the provisional change from the international tourist offices to the missions in numerous countries and to generate confidence among the stakeholders that the missions are ascribing top level priority to tourism promotion. In October 2021, the tourism officers were designated by MEA.
