Algeria is enhancing tourism technology with Italy as new digital promotion plans emerge. Algeria is expediting its tourism technology push with Italy as a new digital promotion platform is set to be developed amidst a national push into artificial intelligence, online tourism services and improved access to the Sahara. The new cooperation is expected to boost the international visibility of Algerian tourism, bringing the desert landscapes, cultural heritage, coastal destinations, thermal attractions and ecological experiences closer to travelers searching for new destinations online.

The new initiative was discussed in Algiers on 1 October 2026, when Algeria’s tourism authorities advanced a technical cooperation project with an Italian partner linked to the My Temple Art digital platform. The proposed project has been designed to improve the online promotion of Algeria and present a broader picture of the country’s tourism potential to both domestic and international audiences. A technical working session had already been held before the latest discussions, showing that the project has moved beyond a simple introductory proposal.

Algeria and Italy Push Digital Tourism Cooperation Forward

Under the proposed cooperation, Italian digital expertise is expected to be used to strengthen how Algeria’s destinations are presented online. The discussions were led on the Algerian side by Tourism Minister Houria Meddahi, while Ben Ajoud Karim, the Algerian representative of Verona-based CK Cooperation S.r.l., and Gianni Paschietto, the Italian general manager associated with the My Temple Art platform, represented the project’s Italian-linked side. The initiative is expected to involve different tourism-sector stakeholders as implementation moves forward.

The Italian side has also signalled that support could be provided towards financing the project. However, no final budget, public launch date, detailed operating model or technical timetable has yet been officially announced. The initiative should therefore be viewed as an advancing digital tourism promotion project, rather than as a completed national booking system. Its final scale will depend on the technology used, the destinations included and the tourism businesses eventually connected to it.

Sahara, Culture, Coast and Wellness Set for Wider Digital Exposure

A broad range of Algerian travel experiences is expected to be promoted through the digital initiative. Saharan tourism has been identified as a major priority, alongside thermal and therapeutic tourism, cultural tourism, ecotourism, beach tourism and spiritual tourism. This approach could allow international visitors to discover considerably more than Algeria’s best-known urban gateways.

Such diversification is important because Algeria possesses tourism assets spread across an enormous geographical area. Travellers can move from Mediterranean coastal destinations and historic cities in the north towards mountain landscapes, archaeological areas, thermal attractions and the vast Sahara. The proposed digital strategy is intended to place these different products within a more visible tourism ecosystem instead of promoting individual attractions in isolation. Algeria has also been seeking a clearer destination identity built around authentic and sustainable tourism rather than mass tourism.

AI Is Becoming a Bigger Part of Algeria’s Tourism Strategy

The Italian platform proposal is arriving as artificial intelligence and smart tourism technology are being given a much larger role in Algeria. Importantly, the government has not yet stated that the My Temple Art project itself will use artificial intelligence. Instead, AI forms part of the country’s wider tourism digitalisation strategy, which is developing alongside the Italian cooperation.

Through IA Tour Algérie 2026, innovative projects have been sought in areas including virtual reality, augmented reality, interactive AI, intelligent recommendation systems, big data and tourism-flow analysis. The programme has also explored technology that could personalise visitor journeys, improve hotel management and create immersive ways of presenting Algerian heritage. At the 2026 international tourism exhibition in Algiers, more than 50 start-ups specialising in digital and smart-tourism solutions were involved, underlining how strongly technology is being positioned within the sector.

Digital Transformation Is Already Reaching Tourism Services

The new promotion project is not being developed in isolation. Algeria has already been expanding a much wider network of digital tourism services. By September 2026, the tourism sector had 29 central digital platforms and information systems, together with 44 additional platforms operated by affiliated institutions and decentralised services.

Digital processes are being introduced for travel-agency accreditation, tourism investment plans, guide cards, vocational training and other administrative services. A digital system connected with visa processing has also been addressed. Online accommodation booking is already supported through the national Book in Algeria service, where accommodation can be searched and prices compared. These developments indicate that the country’s tourism transformation is increasingly being built around the complete visitor and industry journey, from promotion and planning to administration and accommodation.

Easier Sahara Entry Could Support the Digital Promotion Drive

The growing emphasis on digital visibility is especially significant for Sahara tourism, where entry facilitation has already been introduced for eligible foreign travellers. Under Algeria’s special southern tourism arrangement, travellers organising their visit through an accredited Algerian travel agency can qualify for a visa-on-arrival procedure rather than completing the normal consular visa process before departure.

The traveller provides identity, passport and itinerary information to the accredited agency. An authorisation containing a QR code is then issued through the arrangement, allowing the visitor to travel under the organised programme. Official Algerian diplomatic information states that the measure applies to tourism in the Great South. This creates a potentially important connection between digital destination promotion and actual travel conversion: travellers can discover Sahara experiences online before using structured agency-supported procedures to enter the country.

The mechanism has already produced measurable results. Algeria’s tourism authorities reported in July 2026 that the visa-on-arrival system, introduced in 2023, had attracted around 39,000 visitors from 120 nationalities. Further improvement of the programme is being pursued through closer coordination with travel agencies, better visitor data management, guide organisation, professional training and stronger international air connectivity towards southern Algeria.

Tourism Growth Targets Raise the Importance of Technology

Digital promotion is also being strengthened as Algeria pursues larger tourism targets. The national 2026–2028 tourism action plan has been structured around reaching approximately eight million tourists by 2029. A separate target has been established for the Sahara, with 1.5 million tourists in southern regions targeted by 2028.

The latest available annual official figures show the scale from which growth is being pursued. Algeria recorded 3,548,405 tourist arrivals in 2024, representing growth of 7.77% compared with 2023. More than 2.45 million were foreign tourists. Hotel infrastructure was also expanded, with 47 new establishments adding 4,687 beds, bringing the national accommodation stock to 1,423 establishments and 139,963 beds. A further 571 travel agencies were accredited during the year, taking the national total to 5,570.

These numbers help explain why digital visibility, visitor services and tourism infrastructure are being developed together. If substantially more international travellers are to be attracted, greater global awareness must be supported by places to stay, easier trip planning and more efficient visitor services.

Italy Partnership Builds on Earlier Tourism Cooperation

The latest technology initiative also sits within a longer history of Algeria–Italy tourism cooperation. A tourism memorandum of understanding was signed between the two countries in May 2022, establishing a framework for information exchange and the sharing of tourism best practices.

That cooperation was expanded further during discussions in May 2026. Digital marketing, tourism innovation, professional training, investment, hotel development and technology were among the areas considered for closer collaboration. The October digital-platform proposal can therefore be seen as a practical extension of an existing bilateral relationship rather than an isolated technology project.

What Travellers Can Expect Next

For travellers, the immediate change will be seen primarily in how Algeria is discovered and researched online. The My Temple Art-linked proposal could provide another channel through which international audiences are introduced to the country’s deserts, heritage, coast, wellness destinations and ecological attractions. The wider technology strategy could eventually make planning and navigating a visit more connected and personalised.

Important details still remain unresolved. No official launch date has been published for the new platform project. Its budget, languages, booking functions, payment capabilities and complete list of participating destinations have also not been confirmed. It has likewise not been officially established that AI technology will be built directly into My Temple Art.

Algeria is looking to embrace a more digitally connected tourism future. Italy-backed promotional efforts, expanded online services, AI innovations, accommodation growth and eased entry restrictions on the Sahara are converging into a tourism development strategy for the North African nation. If leveraged effectively, these initiatives have the potential to fundamentally change Algeria for international visitors seeking to uncover an emerging regional power on the verge of a tourism explosion by the end of the decade.
