At an event called “Ignite Tourism Thailand”, the government announced on Tuesday its intention to establish Thailand as a premier global tourism destination. It aims to achieve a tourism revenue target of 3.5 trillion baht by 2024 and to attract 150 million air travelers annually by 2030.

The announcement took place at the Government House, led by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin along with Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol. This event was a continuation of the “Ignite Thailand” initiative launched in February, which seeks to position Thailand as a leader across various sectors, including tourism, by 2030.

During this event, the Prime Minister conveyed a message of ambitious growth in the tourism sector for 2024, adding new dimensions to travel. Srettha expressed pride in contributing to making Thailand an inviting location for global visitors, emphasizing the goal to provide a memorable experience from arrival to departure.

He also mentioned that several significant events are planned to take place in Thailand, with details to be announced in the coming months.

Minister Sudawan elaborated on five strategic approaches derived from workshops with tourism stakeholders, aiming to enhance the tourism sector:

  1. Positive experience throughout the journey: Before and during their stay, travelers will be well-informed about their trip to Thailand, covering everything from flight schedules to attractions, ensuring safety and access to essential services.
  2. 5 must-do’s in Thailand: Utilizing the appeal of Thainess, tourists are encouraged to engage in activities quintessential to Thai culture, including Muay Thai, Thai cuisine, cultural exploration, purchasing Thai crafts, and experiencing Thai performances.
  3. Linking primary and secondary tourism provinces: This strategy involves expanding tourism from major cities to neighboring provinces with potential for growth, like the Lanna Culture route linking Chiang Mai with Lamphun and Lampang.
  4. Hub of ASEAN: Thailand plans to enhance regional travel under the ‘Single Destination’ initiative, facilitating seamless travel across Southeast Asia with the use of the ASEAN Pass and cross-border QR payments.
  5. World-class event hub: Promoting Thailand as a venue for premier events, the country will host various global festivals and sports events, with some already confirmed and others under negotiation.
