In terms of overnight stays for tourists, Porto increased more than twice as fast as Lisbon between 2018 and 2022.

Last year, Invicta has 25,936 tourist beds. 30% greater than the previous year’s total of 19,901.

In Lisbon, growth was 13% during the same time, with 59,428 beds in 2018 rising to 67,283 in 2022.

This is one of the findings of an ECO study based on INE data that examines tourism indicators.

This information covers beds in hotels and local accommodations with more than 10 beds, such as hostels and guest homes.

INE eliminates from the statistics the supply of local accommodation beds in private residences.

According to a more extensive research, 4,601 (76%) of the 6,035 new beds in Porto in 2022 are in hotels, with the remaining 1,434 additional beds fall in local housing.

This rise in beds is connected to the expansion of new hotels and hostels in Porto, with 43 more hotels than in 2018 and 65 more local lodging businesses in 2022.

In Lisbon, there was 7,855 more tourist beds in 2022 than there were in 2018.

This figure represents the balance between an increase of 8,508 beds in hotels (56 hotels built in the capital during this time period) and a decrease of 714 beds (5% less) in local accommodation (34 AL businesses closed in the previous five years).

According to ECO, hoteliers explain the increased air traffic in Porto by recalling that since Ryanair began flying to Francisco Sá Carneiro airport, there has been growing interest from aviation companies, which has contributed decisively to the greater interest of investors, both national and international, in recent years.
