The coastal town of Cascais has recently been honoured with the esteemed ‘Green Destinations Platinum’ award during a tourism fair held in Berlin, Germany. This prestigious accolade is bestowed by the Green Destinations Foundation, an organisation dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism practices worldwide.
The foundation evaluates destinations based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including environmental, cultural, economic, social, and management aspects, to determine their commitment to sustainability.
Elevating from its ‘Gold’ status received in 2021, Cascais’s advancement to Platinum certification underscores its adherence to a strict code of ethics in tourism management.
Destinations achieving this level of recognition are noted for their strategic approach to tourism development, meticulous monitoring of tourist activities, and the establishment of sustainability indicators within the tourism sector.
Luís Almeida Capão, the Municipal Director of Environment and Sustainability at Cascais City Council, expressed pride in the achievement, stating Cascais’s ambition to be the prime location for anyone looking to experience the town, whether for a short visit or as a lifelong home. He highlighted the town’s proactive measures to enhance its green credentials, including expanding green spaces, increasing tree plantation efforts, and bolstering biodiversity within both protected and urban areas.
This recognition not only reflects Cascais’s dedication to sustainable tourism practices but also sets a benchmark for other destinations striving towards environmental stewardship and sustainable development in the tourism industry.
