Alstom, a forefront company in smart and sustainable transportation solutions, has secured a contract from Metro do Porto to provide signalling, safety, and control systems for the new pink line of Porto’s metro. The project includes the development and implementation of the Cityflo 250 signalling system by Alstom, featuring an advanced interlocking mechanism for real-time vehicle monitoring. The work on engineering, installation, and commissioning will take place at Alstom’s facility in Maia, within the Porto district.

The initial phase of the pink line, stretching 3 kilometers with four underground stations, aims to link S. Bento to Glorieta de Boavista, enhancing the accessibility to Porto’s center. The line’s launch is anticipated to attract over 30 million riders in its first year, significantly cutting down on private car usage, easing traffic jams, and preventing nearly 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Metro do Porto envisions further extensions to the pink line to create a loop connecting with the overall metro system.

“It is a great honour for Alstom to partner again with Metro do Porto, to improve mobility for citizens and tourists in Porto. We will develop this project from our engineering facilities in Maia, where we lead signalling projects and digital mobility technologies for the Portuguese and international market,” declared David Torres, Alstom in Portugal Managing Director. “This project is a proof of our commitment to promote sustainable mobility in Portugal.”

Porto’s light rail network, managed by Metro do Porto, extends over roughly 78 km, features six lines, and serves about 70 million passengers annually. Alstom has equipped the network with 102 operational trains and the onboard signalling systems. Furthermore, Alstom has been instrumental in the network’s expansion by supplying the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system for the additional 18 trains recently added to the fleet.

With over 30 years of operation in Portugal, Alstom’s technology is a vital part of the Portuguese rail sector, where two-thirds of the trains, including those for high-speed, regional, metro, and tram services, are produced or powered by Alstom. The company also manages over 1,500 km of Portugal’s rail network and more than 500 onboard units with its ATP system, tailored for the Portuguese market. Alstom’s involvement with Metro do Porto includes providing the signalling system and maintaining the network’s 102 trains.

As a global leader in mass transit, Alstom boasts over three decades of expertise in communications-based train control (CBTC), with more than 190 metro lines equipped across over 32 countries.
