During a visit to Daegu on Monday, President Yoon Suk Yeol announced a commitment to significantly support the enhancement of the city’s infrastructure, including the ambitious goal of establishing a new integrated airport by 2030. Speaking at a town hall meeting at Kyungpook National University, President Yoon underscored the necessity of innovating Daegu’s outdated industrial and transportation structures to propel the city into a new era of growth and development.

President Yoon outlined the government’s intention to initiate the construction of a Daegu-Gyeongbuk integrated airport, situated between the North Gyeongsang counties of Uiseong and Gunwi, starting next year. This new facility is expected to replace the older Daegu International Airport and a military airbase, serving as a cornerstone for revolutionizing the city’s transportation network.

This project is part of a broader strategy to fulfill a campaign pledge that focuses on enhancing connectivity within the Daegu and North Gyeongsang area, known as the TK region, including expansion into a high-speed railway network by 2030.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, President Yoon chaired a discussion on transforming Daegu into a hub for new high-tech industries. The relocation of Daegu International Airport, originally opened in 1961, is anticipated to redevelop the current site into a dynamic center for high-tech industries, merging various sectors including industry, housing, education, medicine, culture, and transportation. This initiative aims to address long-standing issues related to noise and development restrictions, significantly impacting local residents’ quality of life.

Furthermore, President Yoon announced plans to bolster Daegu’s position in robotics and future mobility sectors, including a 200 billion won investment to establish a robotics testing site in Dalseong County. He also committed to expanding the intake of medical school students, particularly benefiting prestigious local institutions, to enhance regional healthcare services and attract local talent.

President Yoon Suk Yeol’s pledge to enhance Daegu’s infrastructure and promote high-tech industries marks a significant step toward rejuvenating the city’s economic and social landscape. The construction of a new integrated airport, alongside improvements in transportation and support for emerging industries, is poised to transform Daegu into a vibrant metropolitan area.

These developments are expected to not only improve the livelihoods of the local population but also attract tourists and investors, further solidifying Daegu’s status as a leading city in innovation and technology. As these projects unfold, Daegu is set to witness a transformative phase, contributing to its growth as a key destination for tourism and high-tech industry investment in the region.
