Sydney Airport today joined Qatar Airways in celebrating the five year anniversary of its inaugural Sydney to Doha flight. The daily Boeing 777-300ER service is the arline’s most popular Australian destination.
Just over 1.6 million passengers have travelled on Qatar’s Sydney services since March 2016, with the airline remaining a critical carrier to Australia during the challenges of travelling in 2020.
Since March 2020, Qatar has helped 92,000 travel on the Sydney to Doha route, greatly assisting with repatriation efforts and getting people home.
Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said it was important to acknowledge Qatar Airways’ ongoing commitment to the Australian market.
“So much has changed in the five years Qatar Airways has been flying to Sydney – not to mention in the last 12 months. We were pleased to celebrate this important milestone with the team, and to recognise their strong commitment to Australian travellers, and to Sydney.”
To mark the five-year milestone, the Qatar Airways’ check-in counters at the Airport were adorned with decorations in the airline’s signature colours, and a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony was also held with senior Sydney Airport officials including Geoff Culbert and Qatar Airways’ Vice President Pacific, Thomas Scruby.
Mr. Scruby, said: “This is an exciting milestone for us as we celebrate five years of taking Sydneysiders around the world, and also bringing more tourists to this incredible city.
It’s also an opportunity for us to thank the local food and wine producers whom we have built strong relationships with over the past five years. It’s an especially important time for the travel and aviation industry as we work through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We would not be here today without all our partners in Sydney, and the public who have continued to support us over the years. We’re looking forward to the next five years and beyond.”
