In 2023, the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) celebrated an unprecedented year in tourism, marking a historic high with 1.22 million overnight guests, a notable increase of 8% from the previous year. This surge was largely fueled by a remarkable 24% rise in international tourism.

RAKTDA’s dynamic growth strategy played a pivotal role in this achievement. The strategy encompassed a multifaceted approach, including substantial investments in tourism infrastructure, specialized campaigns to attract more visitors, and a commitment to developing a sustainable tourism ecosystem. As a result, Ras Al Khaimah has solidified its reputation as a leading future travel destination. Key accomplishments in 2023 included:

Raki Phillips, CEO of RAKTDA, commented on the record-breaking year, emphasizing the foundation laid for sustainable growth and development in Ras Al Khaimah. He noted the resilience and agility of the tourism sector in overcoming global challenges and delivering an appealing destination offering.

The efforts of RAKTDA in marketing Ras Al Khaimah globally resulted in a significant 8% increase in total visitor numbers in 2023, reaching the 1.22 million mark, with a 24% boost in international arrivals. The hotel occupancy rate also saw a notable rise, reaching 74% and showing a year-on-year increase of 12 percentage points.

RAKTDA’s collaboration with the Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been instrumental in promoting cross-destination tourism, benefiting both Ras Al Khaimah and Oman’s Musandam region. This strategic partnership aims to position both destinations as top global tourism spots in the Middle East.

To further increase tourism, Ras Al Khaimah has expanded its air and sea connectivity. This includes the introduction of a new daily service by Qatar Airways to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, connecting the Emirate to over 160 global destinations via Doha. Indian airline IndiGo also contributed to this growth with new direct flights from Hyderabad, complementing its Mumbai route. Additionally, the Emirate is set to welcome an increasing number of luxury cruise liners, further boosting tourist numbers.

In terms of responsible tourism, Ras Al Khaimah achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the Silver Certification under EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destinations program, the first in the Middle East. The certification process involved comprehensive monitoring and auditing across various sustainability indicators. RAKTDA also launched its own sustainability certification program, Responsible RAK, with over 20 local tourism businesses achieving certification.

The Emirate also reported impressive improvements in energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste management, outperforming baseline averages in all three areas.

In the hotel sector, Ras Al Khaimah’s portfolio expanded significantly in 2023, with several new hospitality projects including brands like Nobu, Le Méridien, W Hotels, JW Marriott, and Hilton on Al Marjan Island, and Nikki Beach on Mina Al Arab. These projects represent over 1,800 new accommodation options. The year also saw the opening of the Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort with its unique overwater villas and the refurbished Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah. Upcoming hotel projects, including Westin Resort, Sofitel Al Hamra, Rove Al Marjan Island, Rotana Mangrove, and Saij
