On March 28, American Airlines achieved a historic milestone by becoming the inaugural U.S. airline to land at the newly opened Tulum International Airport (TQO). This achievement coincided with the commencement of international operations at TQO, with American Airlines initiating service from Miami International Airport and two additional U.S. hubs. Remarkably, Tulum represents the third fresh international destination inaugurated by Americans departing from MIA this year, broadening the airport’s Mexican routes to a record-breaking seven.

Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s Vice President of MIA Hub Operations.”We continue to strengthen Miami as American’s largest international gateway – offering our customers direct and unparalleled access to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America (MCLA).  New service to Tulum joins our lineup of six destinations in Mexico, including Merida, Monterrey, Cozumel, Cancun, and Mexico City. Our continued growth is a testament to American’s commitment as Miami’s Hometown Airline.”

The service from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Tulum will be available daily throughout the year, offering passengers direct and easy access to the historic ruins, stunning landscapes, and beautiful white sand beaches of this Mexican paradise. This flight will be operated using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which has a capacity of 172 passengers.

Adding to the 45 distinctive destinations already served by American Airlines in the Miami, the Caribbean, and Latin America (MCLA) region from MIA, the Tulum route provides another exciting option. In addition, American recently introduced new flights to Governor’s Harbour in the Bahamas and became the sole U.S. carrier offering direct flights to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, in February.

Miami International Airport, America’s busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers, is receiving an unprecedented investment of $7 billion in capital improvements and $1.7 billion in maintenance upgrades. MIA offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport and is also the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating business revenue of $31.9 billion and approximately 60 percent of all international visitors to Florida annually.
